4 Navigating in the 21 st Century… The NAVIKNOT Multisensor Speed Log Series utilizes satellite-based technology (GPS) in addition to the traditional electromagnetic sensors and Doppler transducers to provide high- accuracy displays of: Dual-axis ground speed and Single-axis water speed Northrop Grumman Private/Proprietary Level I

5 Speed Log Operating Principle

6 The electromagnetic sensor houses a coil which, when energized with an AC current, produces a magnetic field around the sensor in the surrounding water. The ship’s motion through the water produces an electrical field (E) perpendicular to the magnetic field (B) and the ship’s motion (V). The resulting signal is picked up by the sensor electrodes and fed to the preamplifier where it is converted into a digital format and transmitted to the NAVIKNOT electronics unit. 7 Operating Principle (Single-Axis Water Speed) The Doppler transducer utilizes the Doppler frequency shift effect to determine the speed of a vessel through water. The transducer emits 2Mhz frequency sound pulses in the fore and aft directions through two transmitter windows. Two receiver windows in the transducer detect the return echo of the sound pulses. A time delay between pulse transmissions ensures that echoes are received from the undisturbed water outside the vessel’s boundary layer. The signals are processed to determine the ship’s fore/aft speed vector. The preamplifier transmits the speed information in a digital format to the NAVIKNOT electronics unit. 8 Operating Principle (Dual-Axis Ground Speed) motion vector, i.e. the magnitude and direction of motion over ground. The information received from the satellites is processed in the electronics unit, which resolves the velocity data into the ship’s longitudinal and transverse ground speeds. The speed vectors combined with the rate-of-turn data are used to discern between translational and rotational movement of the vessel. These are used to determine the bow and stern transverse speeds shown in the docking display. The satellite sensor makes use of GPS satellite signals to determine a ship’s longitudinal and transverse ground speeds. A dual antenna unit with two GPS receivers and three rate gyros integrated in an electronics unit determine a vessel’s heading, velocity and course. While the heading is referenced to the ship’s fore-and-aft line, the velocity and course represent the Satellite Sensor Northrop Grumman Private/Proprietary Level I

Location of the EM Sensor Principal Requirements Below every vessel moving through the water, there is a wedge-shaped boundary layer, within which the flow speed is lower than the vessel’s actual speed through the water. Directly at the hull surface, the flow speed is zero. Away from the hull, the flow speed increases until it reaches the actual speed at the outer edge of the boundary layer. The boundary layer is just a few millimeter thick at the vessel's bow, increasing to over one meter at the stern. Marine growth on the underwater hull increases its thickness. In addition, areas of turbulence may form within the boundary layer under certain conditions (e.g. speed, draught, depth of water, state of sea) or due to marine growth or the presence of outboard openings. For ships with bulbous bows, the sensor is to be installed between 1.5 and 5 meter from the front of the bow. If the sensor is positioned less than 1.5 meter from the front of the bow, air bubbles will falsify the speed readings. If the sensor is positioned more than 5 metres from the front of the bow, the boundary layer may be too thick. Northrop Grumman Private/Proprietary Level I 64

Location of the Doppler Transducer Principal Requirements While the transducer is mounted flush with the hull, it is not affected by boundary layer effects, because return echoes are received from undisturbed water outside the boundary layer at the hull. However, in common with other sonar devices, the performance of transducer is adversely affected by aeration. Air bubbles block acoustic energy from either being transmitted to the water or being received by echoes from reflectors in the water. If enough acoustic energy is blocked, the speed log operation will be erratic and unreliable. Proper speed log operation depends upon a transducer location that provides a clear sonar path in water that is free from sound blocking air bubbles. Typical causes for aeration are, e.g., bow wave sweep down, cavitation from hull cavities such as bow thruster tunnels, water in- and outlets and cavitation from hull protrusions such as hull zincs, rivets, weld beads, etc. The transducer is to be installed as close to the forward perpendicular of the bow as possible. The maximum aft distance from the forward perpendicular for a flush mounted transducer is 12 metres. Northrop Grumman Private/Proprietary Level I 65

Include drawings of the vessel that show the shape of the bow and that have legible frame numbers and frame spacing.
