8 Wind Energy - What is it? Wind is the natural movement of air across the land or sea. Wind is caused by uneven heating and cooling of the earth's surface and by the earth's rotation. Land and water areas absorb and release different amount of heat received from the sun. As warm air rises, cooler air rushes in to take its place, causing local winds. 9 WIND RESOURCE-GLOBAL WIND SYSTEM The region around equator at 0 deg latitude are heated more by the sun than the rest of the globe. Due to this flow of air takes place from the cold regions to hot regions. All renewable energy (except tidal and geothermal power), and even the energy in fossil fuels, ultimately comes from the sun. About 1–2% of the energy coming from the sun is converted into wind energy

A rotor with an odd number of rotor blades (and at least three blades) can be considered to be similar to a disc when calculating the dynamic properties of the machine.
