 The goal of this project is to construct a parachute that will not only stay in the air the longest, but also be the closest to the target below.

 The effect of the number of balloons on the time and accuracy of the parachute.  If the number of balloons increase then the time it takes to reach the target will increase and the accuracy will increase because the balloons will make the parachute have more air resistance.

 Experimental Groups: 1 Balloon, 3 Balloons, and 4 Balloons.  Independent Variable: Number of Balloons  Dependent Variable: Time and Accuracy  Controlled Variables: Weight and Type of Adhesive  Constants: Height and Air of Balloons

 Plastic Bag, 1  String, 50 cm  Tape, 5 inches  Container  Weight  Glue  Washer  Pencil  Balloons, 10

 1. Pump up balloons  2. Put balloons in the plastic bag  3. Attach washer to the parachute  4. Place the target on ground  5. Hold prototype from 10 feet  6. Drop prototype  7. While the parachute is dropping record time  8. Measure distance parachute from target.  9. Repeat steps 5-8 for other parachutes  10. Repeat steps 5-9 for trials 2,3,4,5,6

Time (sec)Accuracy (cm) 2.410 2.618 2.315 2.412 2.017 2.114

 Plastic Bag, 1  Rubber Band, 1  Weight  Washer  Pencil  Balloons, 3

 1. Pump up balloons  2. Put balloons in plastic bag  3. Put washer in plastic handles and tie with rubber bands  4.

Time (sec)Accuracy (cm) 4.274 4.568 4.971 4.178 5.073 4.769

 My problem question is the effect of the number of balloons on the time and accuracy of the parachute. My hypothesis was refuted because even though the parachute stayed longer in the air with more balloons it was not more accurate to the target. For example, at 4 balloons the time was 5-6 seconds but the accuracy was 70-80 cm. There were no unusual results. Some factors that could have affected my testing is the placement of the balloons because that affected where the parachute was going. Also maybe the tying of the knot for the washer could have affected the parachute. An interesting experiment that I could try next is maybe adding more extra parachute.
