Title – Process Migration and Mobile Agents By David Aihe
Motivation -The idea of process migration has existed for a long time, probably as old as man. -In computers process migration is the act of transferring a process between two machines. - It enables load distribution (balancing), data access locality, etc. -With all these goals, process migration hasn’t received a wide spread use partly because of the performance degradation during the migration and some other issues. -The motivation for carrying out this research is to find out why process migration hasn’t received a wide spread use with all the ‘theoretical’ benefits attached to it. -This research will focus on some of the issues preventing the wide spread use of process migration, and suggest some theoretical solutions having in mind that there are existing competing technologies.
Background -Currently there are a lot of researches going on in the field of process migration and mobile agents - IBM’s Aglets, General Magic’s Odyssey are some mobile agent architectures. -Some researchers in the field of process migration include -Claus Hagen -Gustavo Alonso
Specific Objectives – (what I plan to do) -A brief introduction to process migration - What it is - Different types of process migration - its uses and reasons for its use -A brief discussions on the current limitations to process migration in some systems, for example realtime systems. -Problem Description : I will research on – - Backup problems - Performance problems - Recovery problems - Reliability problems
- For example, in terms of performance we know that in the transfer of data or a process over a communication channel, the time t of transfer is directly proportional to the distance and nature of the communication channel t α d, t = kd where t is time, d is distance between the two systems and k is the nature of the communication channel d System 1System 2
-In terms of performance, suggesting ways to minimize t will be the goal of the research -Solution Description – I will suggest solutions to the problems described above -For example in terms of performance, I am currently thinking of using data modeling techniques in continuing the process in the communication channel with the help of mobile intelligent agents.
