3  District scholarships are those scholarships that are awarded to students of Burnaby School District.  This means that you will be competing against other within Burnaby…For example, your competition is North, Alpha, Cariboo.  District scholarships are also scholarships that are automatically awarded to Burnaby Mountain students ONLY!

7 Burnaby South War Memorial (1 award) BURSARY DESCRIPTION In recognition and memory of the young men and women from Burnaby who fought for Canada in World War II ELIGIBILITY The Burnaby South War Memorial bursaries are awarded annually to two deserving Burnaby secondary school graduates who have continually demonstrated the values associated with good citizenship - caring, sharing, responsibility and a willingness to help others. To be considered for a bursary a student must:  be a Canadian citizen and have graduated from a School District 41 secondary school;  have the desire to continue his/her education at a post secondary institution in Canada and have been accepted to attend a post secondary institution;  have been nominated for the award by the staff of the school.

8 Louella Downing (1 award) SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION The scholarship is awarded to a student who has excelled in the Visual Arts in secondary school and who is planning on pursuing a career in Visual Arts at a post secondary institution. ELIGIBILITY To be considered for the award the student should have:  Maintained a good academic standing  Demonstrated excellence in a minimum of two senior Visual Arts courses  Demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Visual Arts  Formally submitted an application to the Burnaby Teachers' Association. Applications will then be forwarded to a committee of three teachers selected by the Burnaby Art Teachers' Association for selection.  Submitted 8 – 10 photographs of original art work illustrating a range of subjects and media. Each photo must be labeled with the size and media of the art work shown.  The scholarship will be awarded upon proof of registration in a post secondary institution in art, film or design program.

9 Ted Elphick (1 award) BURSARY DESCRIPTION In recognition and memory of Ted Elphick, a dedicated educator whose leadership and contribution to the education of challenged students provided a professional legacy for which the Burnaby School District can be proud and thankful. ELIGIBILITY The Ted Elphick Memorial bursary is awarded annually to a Burnaby resident who has, through positive will and spirit, overcome physical or mental challenges to graduate from a Burnaby secondary school. To be considered for the bursary the student should have:  been enrolled in a Burnaby school for five years;  demonstrated ability and a desire to be a life long learner and continue his or her education at a post secondary institution or in a recognized training program;  been nominated for the award by the school scholarship committee.

10 Lex Henderson Memorial (1 award) BURSARY DESCRIPTION This bursary is awarded in memory of Lex Henderson whose legacy in Burnaby schools is found in his commitment and dedication to high school sports and educational leadership. The bursary is awarded to a well-rounded student who, while maintaining a good academic standing, has demonstrated a passion for sports, teamwork, and good citizenship and leadership skills and has actively participated in school and/or community sports. ELIGIBILITY To be considered for the award the student should:  be passionate about sports and committed to the spirit of "teamwork".  have been involved in school and/or community sports as a player, manager or other contributing role  have demonstrated having a positive influence in the school and/or community through dedication and hard work  exemplify strong character demonstrating personal responsibility and respect for others  demonstrated plans to continue with education in a post secondary program  formally submitted a completed application package to the school’s scholarship committee

11 Marlene Lawson (1 award) Eligibility This award is given to a Burnaby graduate who is blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind. To be considered the student should:  Be planning on enrolling in post secondary.  Demonstrate ability to set goals.  Be motivated.  Show responsibility.  Be oriented towards independence.

12 Parkcrest Children’s Center (1 award) SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION The scholarship is awarded to a past student of Parkcrest Children’s Centre who is a well- rounded student who, while maintaining a good academic standing, has participated in school and community activities. ELIGIBILITY To be considered for the award the student must have:  proof of attendance at Parkcrest Childcare Society (Parkcrest Children’s Centre) for a period of at least one year  been enrolled in a Burnaby school for the two (2) senior years  provided evidence of volunteer or work experience, including letters of reference attesting to the student’s work ethic  been actively involved in community service and/or volunteer work  demonstrated good citizenship and leadership skills  maintained a good academic standing  formally submitted an application form to the Burnaby School District's Scholarship Committee

13 Royal Arch (2 awards) SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION The scholarship is awarded to a well-rounded student who seeks a career in Health Care and while maintaining a good academic standing, has demonstrated good citizenship and leadership skills through voluntary participation in assisting older adults in the community. ELIGIBILITY To be considered for the award the student should have:  been enrolled in a Burnaby school for the two (2) senior years  maintained a good academic standing  demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Health Care  demonstrated community service assisting older adults  demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school and the community (excluding work experience)  formally submitted an application form to Burnaby School District's Scholarship Committee  The scholarship will be awarded upon proof of registration in a post secondary institution.

14 Marjorie Jane Stephenson (2 awards) SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION The scholarship is awarded to a well-rounded student who seeks a career in Health Care and while maintaining a good academic standing, has demonstrated good citizenship and leadership skills through voluntary participation in assisting older adults in the community. ELIGIBILITY To be considered for the award the student must have:  been enrolled in a Burnaby school for the two (2) senior years  maintained a good academic standing  demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in Health Care  demonstrated community service assisting older adults  demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership skills in the school and the community  formally submitted an application form to Burnaby School District's Scholarship Committee  The scholarship will be awarded to the successful candidate upon proof of registration in a post secondary institution.

15 Vancouver Port (1 award) SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION The Vancouver Port Corporation Scholarship, worth $750.00, is awarded annually to a well rounded student who meets the following criteria: ELIGIBILITY To be considered for the scholarship the student should have:  maintained a good standard of achievement;  demonstrated good citizenship in school and the community;  been actively involved in community service and/or volunteer work.

17 Burnaby Civic Employees Union-CUPE 23 SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION The Cupe Local 23 Scholarship of $500.00 is awarded to one student in each of Burnaby’s secondary schools who meets the following criteria: ELIGIBILITY The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has:  Maintained a good academic standing  Demonstrated good citizenship in school and the community  Participated in volunteer activities  Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is going on to a BC post secondary or vocational training program.  Consideration should be given to a student with financial need.

18 Harris & Company Eligibility To be considered for this award the student should have excelled in Law 12 and expressed an intention to enroll in post secondary education at a recognized institute, college or university.

19 RICOH SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION The scholarship is awarded to a student who, while maintaining a good academic standing has made a significant contribution to the school by demonstrating good citizenship and involvement in school activities. ELIGIBILITY To be considered for the scholarship the student should have:  Demonstrated good citizenship  Been actively involved in school service  Maintained a good academic standing  Formally submitted an application form to Burnaby School District’s Scholarship Committee  The scholarship will be awarded upon proof of registration in a post secondary program at BCIT. Students must claim the award within two (2) years of graduating from secondary school. Consideration will be given to student with financial need.

20 Rotary Club of Burnaby Bursary The Rotary Club of Burnaby Bursary Award is awarded to a student who meets the following criteria:  Has maintained good academic standing  Has demonstrated good citizenship and strong leadership in school and in the community  Has participated in community service and volunteer work in the community  Demonstrates financial need

21 District Dogwood Scholarships Who has the following? 5 senior courses (Grade 11 & 12 courses) in ONE of the following concentrations… Languages Physical Education Fine Arts Applied Skills Work Experience Placements Count as Courses for this One If you meet the above criteria…you need to see me for a Dogwood Application…ACE IT KIDS…I’m looking for you!

22 If you are applying, you MUST:  Obtain and complete an application form specific to the scholarship you are applying to.  Include an official transcript (1 official, the other applications can have photocopies so long as I can see the embossed stamp!)  Include the “Application Form for Student Activity”..(One must be original, others can be copies).  Include each of your applications and accompanying documentation in a separate envelope labelled with your name and the name of the scholarship you are applying for. Every scholarship you apply to, MUST have all of the documentation listed above! If some information is missing, YOU will miss OUT and I will NOT coddle you! DEADLINES DO APPLY AND ARE FIRM!

23 What does it mean? Active citizenship includes the following BUT is not limited to things like: In/out of school involvement Authenticity of your involvement. Integrity Preparedness (Coming to class on time, homework completion etc) Regular Attendance in ALL classes Work Ethic Student Conduct Do you think anyone pays attention to you? Can you improve?

24 Work Experience includes the 30 hours you MUST complete for graduation. Work Experience may also include the 90 hours/120 hours you have chosen to get CREDIT for. Volunteering includes anything additional to the above. What then do we look for? We are looking to identify those kids who… Demonstrate a commitment of time and passion above and beyond what is essential. We want to know…  How many hours you have committed beyond the programs above.  When did you commit your time? Afterschool, lunch, weekends etc.  What was the nature of and in what capacity did you complete this work? Secret to Success… Successful applications clearly outline this information and they provide proof in their accompanying references.

25  Be sure your demographic information is correct…now and in the Summer of 2013. You may be finished school, BUT the money flow hasn’t!  Make sure we have your preferred name and usual name….don’t elicit confusion!  Read criteria carefully.  Provide evidence whenever you can!  Be truthful.  Adhere to deadlines and make sure your applications are COMPLETE!  Presentation is everything…check for spelling errors, don’t use 2 different coloured pens, have a respectable email account etc.  Ask questions…come and see me…be prepared!
