2 Matthew Chapter 5 >>>>>>>>>>>> Click for Summary of last time…

3 Summary of Last time: Remember, last time, we started Chapter 5…
…and we left off in the middle of the “Beatitudes” }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for brief review...

4 We talked a little about the multitudes that came to hear
Jesus teach… Remember, they were predominantly Jews (some others too) And remember the Jews were really quite self-righteous They knew they were children of Abraham They were the only ones that God had “chosen” and had been given the promises from God They also were the only ones that God had given the Law to So, they figured since they were children of Abraham, and God had chosen them, and had given them all the promises of the OT, and had entrusted His Law to them, they were the ONLY children of God }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

5 Matthew 5:3-12 3 " Blessed are the… 4 "Blessed are those…
11 "Blessed are you… We looked at verses 3-12 and saw the phrase “Blessed are” – given 9 times }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

6 “Blessed are” = Latin: Beatitudo Greek: μακάριος “Supremely blessed”
We saw that “Blessed are” is the English for the word “beatitude” in the Latin Taken from Jerome’s Latin Vulgate Bible (390 AD AD) … And that’s where we get the name often used for this section of Jesus’ introduction to “The Sermon on The Mount” “The beatitudes” We saw that the Greek word translated into our English “Blessed are” is: makarios (mak-ar'-ee-os); meaning: SUPREMELY BLESSED; or fortunate, or well off: The KJV uses blessed, or happy And as we looked at each of the individual beatitudes, we saw that “Supremely Blessed” is a good translation }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

7 Acts 3:25 & 26 25 "It is you who are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'AND IN YOUR SEED ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED.' 26 "For you first, God raised up His Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways." NASU READ VERSES Peter said that Jesus as our High Priest of the Book of Hebrews will “bless us”… So, we noted that it is interesting that Jesus starts His sermon with a group of blessings And we saw that... Most of the blessings He pronounces here will make one happy and they will be blessed indeed if they receive most of what He pronounces here And after we looked at each of the beatitudes individually, we began to look at them in the order that Matthew recorded them... }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

8 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the poor in spirit…”
"Blessed are those who mourn…” "Blessed are the gentle…” "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” "Blessed are the merciful…” "Blessed are the pure in heart…” "Blessed are the peacemakers…” "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…” "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you…because of Me.” Here’s how Matthew has these beatitudes grouped… Look at the groups (bullets) I think it is reflective of the process in a person’s life who becomes a follower of Jesus Christ… The first two reflect when a person realizes their need for a Savior And the third through the ninth reflect what happens in a Christian’s life and what a Christian should be like... ...and expect }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

9 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the poor in spirit…”
"Blessed are those who mourn…” "Blessed are the gentle…” "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” "Blessed are the merciful…” "Blessed are the pure in heart…” "Blessed are the peacemakers…” "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…” "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you…because of Me.” We will look at them briefly in those groups and I will show you what I mean… (We looked at the first 3 last time, but we’ll go over the whole group again so you can see how they fit) }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to look at first beatitude...

10 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the poor in spirit…”
"Blessed are those who mourn…” "Blessed are the gentle…” "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” "Blessed are the merciful…” "Blessed are the pure in heart…” "Blessed are the peacemakers…” "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…” "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you…because of Me.” "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" READ BEATITUDE A person must come to realize they are very poor in spirit... They must come to the place of realizing they are spiritually bankrupt and absolutely helpless before they can come to Jesus... They need to realize that they can never do it on their own… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for verses...

11 Romans 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin. NASU READ VERSE }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next verse...

12 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, NASU READ VERSE }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to go back to beatitude...

13 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" And so one must realize they are “poor in spirit” to see their need for God… And only after that, and after they put their faith in Jesus, then they will receive the kingdom of heaven! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next beatitude...

14 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." READ BEATITUDE Once one realizes their hopeless situation it should cause them to mourn… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for verses...

15 2 Corinthians 7:10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. NASU READ VERSE Paul is telling us here that a sorrow that God has brought on in a person’s life will lead to repentance and salvation, But a sorrow that is just of the world, leads to death… A good example of one who had just a worldly sorrow is Judas Iscariot, when he saw that Jesus had been condemned, he felt remorse… But, apparently he never repented, he just went out and hanged himself! (Jesus commented on Judas saying it would have been better if he had never been born) And a good example of one who had a sorrow that was of the will of God… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for verses...

16 Luke 18:13 & 14 13 "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!' 14 "I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." NASU You remember the story Jesus told of two men who went up to the temple to pray… The Pharisee was thanking God that he was so privileged to be a Jewish MAN and that he was so good in all that he did, and that he was NOT a TAX COLLECTOR! READ VERSES The tax collector came to realize his spiritual bankruptcy and the hopelessness of his standing with God and it brought about sorrow that caused him to cry out to God for MERCY! And Jesus said that he went away justified! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to go back to the beatitude...

17 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." The tax collector mourned over his sinfulness, and he received mercy or comfort! Oh how SUPREMELY BLESSED he was after that! When God reveals to a person their sinfulness, it should cause them to mourn over it and turn to Him for mercy! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next beatitude...

18 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.” READ BEATITUDE Ever notice how a person changes when they come to know Jesus? }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click verses...

19 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22 & 23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. NASU READ VERSES And when Jesus begins to rule in a person’s life, His Holy Spirit takes up residency in their life And the fruit of the Spirit begins to become evident And one of the fruit of the Spirit is GENTLENESS! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

20 Matthew 11:28-30 28 " Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." NASU READ VERSES Jesus Himself is GENTLE… Remember how when He was on the cross, the religious leaders, and the people came by and mocked Him? Jesus had the power to toast them all! - Yet He continued to be gentle It took tremendous power to continue to be gentle in those circumstances! And as followers of Jesus we should be Christ like, which means we should be gentle! Sometimes it takes great strength to continue to be gentle ...Strength only found in the power of the Holy Spirit! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next beatitude...

21 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.” "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied” READ BEATITUDE Mankind, by nature does not hunger and thirst for righteousness…. }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click verses...

22 The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick;
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? NASU READ VERSE In fact, the heart tends toward evil Only after one trusts Jesus as Savior and the Holy Spirit takes up residency in their lives, do they then “Hunger and thirst for righteousness” And when one hungers after righteousness, God is pleased and they WILL be satisfied! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next beatitude...

23 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied” "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” READ BEATITUDE As followers of Jesus, we are to be merciful… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click verses...

24 Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. NASU READ VERSE Jesus tells us that if we forgive others, we will be forgiven Also, remember Jesus’ parable of the slave who owed his master ten thousand talents? }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for Matt 18:

25 Matthew 18:23-35 TURN TO AND READ PASSAGE
(A talent was worth more than 15 years wages of a common laborer) (10,000 talents would = 150,000 years wages!) Then he had a fellow slave who owed him 100 denarii… (A denarius was about a day’s wage) }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

26 Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. NASU Jesus is showing how God has had incredible mercy on us, and has forgiven a debt that was absolutely impossible for us to pay and so we should be merciful too In fact, if we have trusted Jesus for salvation, we have already received an unbelievable amount of mercy! It would be a small thing for us to be merciful to others! And how much more supremely blessed we will be when we are merciful! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next beatitude...

27 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied” "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. READ BEATITUDE Again, as the Holy Spirit takes control of a believer’s life, the fruit of the Spirit become evident. ...Love, Joy, PEACE,... A person who is a true child of God, is a peacemaker!... }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click verses...

28 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Romans 15:33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen. NASU READ VERSE 7 times in the NT God is referred to as the God of peace! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

29 Glory to God in the highest,
Luke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased. NASU READ VERSE The angels proclaimed peace at the birth of Jesus… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

30 Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, NASU READ VERSE Jesus came to make peace between man and God }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

31 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.
Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. NASU READ VERSE If we are living in the power of the spirit, then one of the things in our life will be peace… We will live at peace with our spouses, kids, fellow Christians, etc. and we will be a testimony to the world When a person is filled with the Spirit, they can be agents of peace to the world… They can respond kindly to harsh words or actions Proverbs15:1 says; “A gentle answer turns away wrath” A person who does this, will be called a child of God }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click for next beatitude...

32 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied” "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…” "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you…because of Me.” READ BEATITUDES }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click verses...

33 John 15:20 Remember the word that I said to you, ' A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also NASU READ VERSES When someone becomes a follower of Jesus Christ, they can expect insults and persecution of some sort But remember… It is because you are a child of God! And as a child of God - You are SUPREMEMLY BLESSED! So, blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, and because of Jesus! }}}}}}}}}} click to go back to list of beatitudes…

34 The “Beatitudes”: "Blessed are the poor in spirit…”
"Blessed are those who mourn…” "Blessed are the gentle…” "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” "Blessed are the merciful…” "Blessed are the pure in heart…” "Blessed are the peacemakers…” "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…” "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you…because of Me.” So, I think you can see that the way they are grouped here in Matthew is reflective of the process of a person coming to Christ and then living for Christ >>>>>>>>> Click for next...

35 Verses 13-20 Chapter 5 READ Chapter 5:13-20

36 You are the salt of the earth;
Matthew 5:13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. NASU READ VERSE Something to consider: I think, we are not actually the salt, but we are the messengers or carriers of the salt which is God – Book title: Out of the Salt Shaker and Into the World Rebecca Manly Pippert Let’s think about the uses and value of salt in Jesus’ day… Salt was very valuable in that time, in fact a lot of the time soldiers were paid their wages in salt! Probably where the saying; “He’s not worth his salt” came from }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

37 You are the salt of the earth;
Matthew 5:13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. NASU Salt was a preservative – they had no refrigeration, so salt was very important to keep foods (specifically meats) from spoiling... We as carriers of salt, are to be God’s preservative in our world We are to keep the world from being “spoiled” by satan Salt was used to flavor things… We as the carriers of salt are to flavor the world and add God’s influence on the world }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

38 You are the salt of the earth;
Matthew 5:13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. NASU God left us (Christians) to influence the world (remember, satan is the god of this world and rules it, and the world is corrupt because of him) and so we are to counter his influence by influencing the world for Christ Again, if we as believers allow the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives and allow His fruit to come through our lives, we will be the salt of the earth! >>>>>>>>> Click for next...

39 Matthew 5:14-16 14 "You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. 41 Matthew 5:14-16 14 "You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. NASU Again, I think we are just carriers or messengers of the true light - God And if we allow the fruit of the Spirit to come through our lives, we will let God’s light shine Light is the opposite of darkness, the world is full of darkness (remember the prophecy; “the people sitting in darkness, and upon the land a light has dawned”?) Satan is the king of darkness – God is the one who brought light into the world – “In the beginning... light” we are to be agents of light, we are to be agents of God’s holiness, we are to bring God’s holiness (light) into the world }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

42 Matthew 5:14-16 14 "You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. NASU And we are to let our light shine before men: That is not with just our mouth, but with our actions You can SAY all you want, but people want to see if it is true in your actions And we should let it shine in such a way that they will not see us, but will SEE GOD! And it will bring glory and honor to Him! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

43 So, remember… Jesus said; “YOU are the salt of the earth”… And… “YOU are the light of the world” Where else is the world going to get Salt and Light? !!!!! And here are a couple of verses to consider… }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

46 I don’t know about you, but it makes me a little
uncomfortable to think I am the salt of the earth and I am the light of the world! I’M A SINNER! I’M NOT PERFECT! And I think if everyone in this room really thinks about it, we all should be a little uncomfortable! God, the source of perfect Salt and source of perfect Light, has left us to be the ones who are to bring salt and light to the world! And let me say, I don’t always do such a good job of it! It’s VERY humbling! }}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Click to continue...

47 But, don’t forget, God has not left us alone!
We, as followers of Jesus Christ, have the Holy Spirit living in us, and by His power, and ONLY by His power, we CAN BE SALT AND LIGHT! We just need to get our flesh out of the way of the Holy Spirit and let Him do it! >>>>>>>>> Click for next...
