1 Vocabulary Lesson #7 The Land of Oz

2 Dampen (V.)  “Do not, I beg of you, dampen today’s sun with the showers of tomorrow.  Definition : to depress, discourage, or deaden; also, to moisten  The class dampened Mr. Scott’s day because they didn’t complete their work.

3 Dampen (V.) * Describe a time when somebody dampened your day. Explain the effect it had on you.

4 Humble (Adj.) *”I thank your Majesty,” said Jack, humbly. *Definition : without pride or vanity; modest; meek; lowly. *The humble girl began to cry as she won the first place award.

5 Humble (Adj.) *Is it good to be humble? Explain.

6 Indefinite (adj.) *For before your head has time to spoil you can have it canned, and in that way it may be preserved indefinitely. * Definition : not clearly defined or with no set limits *The inmates did not know when they were going to be released because they were given indefinite sentences.

7 Indefinite (Adj.) *Give an example of something that may be indefinite.

8 Latter (Adj.) *The Scarecrow introduced Tip and Jack Pumpkinhead, and the latter personage seemed to interest the Woodman. *Definition: being the second of two things mentioned. *We will go to the park during the latter part of the day.

11 Personage (N.) *Who do you feel is important or noteworthy? Explain.

12 Preserve (V.)  For before your head has time to spoil you can have it canned, and in that way it may be preserved indefinitely.  Definition: To keep safe from injury, destruction, or decay  It is important to preserve what few areas of nature we have left for future generations.

13 Preserve (V.)  What is something that you might preserve? Why?

14 Select (Adj.) * You are certainly unusual, and therefore worthy to become a member of our select society. *Definition: of special value or excellence; choice *Only select students are chosen for Student Council.

15 Select (Adj.) *Describe a time when you were selectively chosen for something. How did you feel?

16 Society (N.) *You are certainly unusual, and therefore worthy to become a member of our select society. *Definition: A group of persons linked for any reason, having common traditions and interests * The society you live in can effect your behavior.

17 Society (N.) * What problems do you see within your society? How do they effect you?

18 Substantial (Adj.) * “You are not very substantial, I must admit,” said the Emperor. * Definition: having body; solid; strong; firm * My husband makes a substantial amount of money in his new job.

19 Substantial (Adj.) * In order to make a substantial amount of money, do you need a college degree? Explain.

20 Sympathetic (Adj.) *”Nonsense!” said the Emperor – but in a kindly, sympathetic tone. *Definition: Having feelings of compassion or understanding. * When I see a friend upset, I try to lend her a sympathetic ear.

21 Sympathetic (Adj.) * When have you felt sympathy for someone or something?
