Models and additive manufacturing Teppo Vienamo

Agenda 13:15 ADF – About models – Additive technologies – Tour: 3D printlab ville Kukko-Liedes Machineshop Kari Kääriäinen – Finalizing model 15:30 ADDLab

Why to make models? concrete helps thinking physical extension of brain sharing milestone testing

How to make models By hand – foam – paper – clay Manual machining Digital – Additive technology – CNC machining Reproduction – Casting E.G. Silicon moulds

Slices  objects = 3D-Printing Stacking up 2D images to 3D objects Simple process for automation Additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing methods Vat Photopolymerization Powder Bed Fusion Material Extrusion Material Jetting Binder Jetting Sheet Lamination Directed Energy Deposition

Vat Photopolymerization – Stereolithography The mirror steers the laser beam to image one slice of the object Photocurable polymer Part moves down New layer is recoated

Powder Bed Fusion

Material Extrusion

Getting part printed Save as stereolitography.STL – Maximum tolerance – Multimaterial print: save parts as assembly to stl, common zero point and position in coordination Send file to: – Aalto Arts: Osse Federley osse.federley@aalto.fiosse.federley@aalto.fi – ADDLab: Meng Wang wang.meng@aalto.fiwang.meng@aalto.fi – Mention: Plastic Product Design / Teppo Vienamo

Finalizing additive model Teppo Vienamo

Rough grinding Spray paint thin layer Grind (no 80-120 paper) until only deepest grooves have paint Slight grinding by 220 Surface of actual 3D-model print

Base Clean dirt, dust water etc. away Paint with spray filler Grinding with water (and soap) 240 - 360 paper Fill deep grooves with 2 component polyesther filler Repaint by filling primer if plastics exposes Gradually to finer sand paper – 360  600 – The glossier finish, the finer paper – 800 fairly good – For extreme gloss the final surface is grinded with paste 1000 - 2000

Spray painting Solver of the primer swells the plastics – Allow to evaporate over night Constant color bottom Supporting the part for painting Spray painting – Steady movements – Open the spray shooting of the part – Perpendicular to surface – 30 cm distance – Cavite's difficult – First thin layer, few minutes dryining – Wet layer for final surface If starts to run cold helps After drying can be polished

Efects Effect surface, EDM – Spraying droplets to surface – Allow to dry – More droplets – Etc. Matt surface – Matt paint – Matt lacquer

Displays Colored print on paper Colored print to back side of over head projector film – Print behind the film – Basic color is spray-painted to the back – Spray glue
