Suzanne D'Anna2 Body is divided into two portions: n axial - head, neck, and trunk n appendicular - limbs

Suzanne D'Anna3 Body Cavities n confined spaces within body n contain internal organs n Two basic cavities: (within axial) - dorsal - ventral

Suzanne D'Anna4 Dorsal Body Cavity (back or dorsal surface of body) n Subdivided into: - cranial - vertebral

Suzanne D'Anna5 Body Cavities n Examples: - oral (mouth, teeth, tongue) - nasal (nose, sinuses) - orbital (eyes) - middle ear cavities (middle ear bones)

Suzanne D'Anna6 Cranial Cavity n formed by skull n contains brain Vertebral Cavity n formed by vertebrae of spinal column n contains spinal cavity

Suzanne D'Anna7 Ventral Body Cavity n located in ventral aspect of body n lined with serous membrane which covers organs within n inside organs are called viscera n Two principle parts: - thoracic cavity - upper - abdominopelvic cavity - lower thoracic and abdominal cavities are separated by diaphragm

Suzanne D'Anna8 Thoracic Cavity (upper) n Three compartments: - two pleural (around lungs - pleura) - pericardial (covers heart - pericardium)

Suzanne D'Anna9 Abdominopelvic Cavity (lower) n 2 portions: - upper - abdominal - lower - pelvic peritoneum lines cavity and covers organs within

Suzanne D'Anna10 Abdominal (upper) n stomach n spleen n liver n gallbladder n pancreas n small intestine n most of large intestine

Suzanne D'Anna11 Pelvic (lower) n urinary bladder n portions of the large intestine n internal organs of reproduction

Suzanne D'Anna12 Abdominopelvic Regions (nine regions) n epigastric - upper middle portion n left and right hypochondriac regions - on either side of the epigastric region n umbilical region - middle portion

Suzanne D'Anna13 Abdominopelvic Regions n left and right lumbar regions - on each side of the umbilical region n hypogastric region - lower middle portion n left and right iliac regions (inguinal) - on each side of the hypogastric region
