Date: the 1st day of the 1st lunar month Special food: jiaozi, babaofan, and niangao ( “year cake”) Brief introduction: The Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar New Year, is celebrated according to the lunar calendar. Generally speaking, all the members of a family gather round a table to have a lot of food and drinks while watching TV. The character gao in the word niangao shares the same meaning with the word “high”, suggesting “growing up and prospering(繁荣)” in the new year. Back

Date: the 5th day of the 5th lunar month; Zongzi; Special food: Brief introduction: The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated in memory of Qu Yuan, an ancient poet who drowned himself because of being dissatisfied with a corrupt court. It’s said that Zongzi were originally dropped into to river where Qu Yuan died to protect him from being eaten by the fish. Today, however, dragon boat races are held during the festival and the zongzi are consumed by the living. back
