1 Down the Ramp Procedure: 1.Stack books on top of each other. 2.Make a RAMP with the meter stick – 1 cm end on the floor. 3.Hold one ball at the PINK dot on the ramp. Let the ball go. 4.Place the PINK marker on the floor where the ball stops. 5.Do this two more times for the PINK dot. 6.Do the same for the ORANGE, GREEN and YELLOW dots. 7.MEASURE (cm) the farthest distance for each color and RECORD. 8.Look at all the markers on the floor. 9.QUESTION: What does changing the height the ball rolls from do to the distance rolled? What happens if we start the ball at different heights on the ramp?

2 Roadblock Procedure: 1.Place a box 20 cm away from the meter stick. 2.Hold the ball near the YELLOW dot on the ruler and release the ball. 3.Use a washable marker to map the path of the ball on the paper. 4.Place a textbook 20 cm away from the ruler. 5.Hold the ball near the YELLOW dot on the ruler and release. 6.Map the path of the ball on the paper. 7.Repeat using a ball at the GREEN dot for the box and book. 8.Repeat for the ORANGE and PINK dots. 9.QUESTION: How did the roadblock change the path of the ball? How was the PATH different for the book and box? Can we change the direction the ball takes after leaving the ramp?

3 Changes Procedure: 1.Set up the ramp on top of the books with the 1cm end on the floor. 2.Place a ball at the YELLOW dot and release. 3.Measure and record how far the ball rolls from the end of the ramp. Repeat two more times. 4.Place TILE under the ramp. Roll the ball from the YELLOW dot. 5.Mark and measure how far the ball rolls three times. 6.Place the CABINET LINER under the ramp. Roll the ball from the YELLOW dot. Mark and measure how far the ball rolls three times. 7.QUESTION: How did changing the surface change how far the ball rolled? 8.Try this experiment at different dot heights. How does changing the surface change the movement of the ball?

4 Road Race Procedure: 1.Place the ramp against the books. 2.Have 3 students choose a vehicle to race. 3.Hold 3 vehicles at the top of the ramp, and at the same time let them go. 4.Have a student watch to see which vehicle got to the end of the ramp first. 5.Repeat the race 3 times to see if the outcome varies. 6.QUESTION: Which vehicle raced the fastest? Why do you think this happened? Will the shape or size of the vehicle cause it to race faster than another shape?
