The Chemistry Hot Seat Break into groups. I will provide you with a question. Everybody in the group will write down the question and provide an answer for the question. One person is on the Hot Seat, I will check their answer first.

Scoring Scoring is as follows… If the person on the Hot Seat answers the question correctly, your team will score 6 points. If the person on the Hot Seat answers it incorrectly, I will check the remainder of the groups answers. You will score a single point for every correct answer provided. Note: Group members are not allowed to share their answers.

Question #1 What are the 3 components that make up an atom? You must have all three to be correct. 1.Electrons (negative) 2.Protons (positive) 3.Neutrons (no charge)

Question #2 This component of an atom possesses relatively no mass? An Electron, which is found in the valence shells.

Question #3 What shell is the M-Shell? What is the maximum number of electrons it can hold? It is the third level and can hold up to 8 electrons.

Question #4 Draw the Bohr diagram for Carbon.

Question #5 The atom represented by the diagram to the right is… Noble Gas

Question #6 What does the atomic number of each element represent? The atomic number represents the number of protons that an atom has.

Question #7 The atomic mass is equal to the number of ____________ and ____________. Atomic Mass = # of Protons + # of Neutrons

Question #9 Draw the Lewis Dot Diagram of Neon.

Question #10 Draw the Lewis Dot Diagram for Nitrogen.

Question #11 Predict the number of valence electrons for lead. 4

Question #12 What is an ion? How is it formed? An ion is an atom with a charge. It is formed when an atom gains or loses an electron.

Question #13 Name the five major families in the periodic table. 1.Alkali Metals 2.Alkaline Earth Metals 3.Chalcogens 4.Halogens 5.Noble/Inert Gases

Question #14 These are the most reactive elements and are never found alone in nature. Alkali Metals

Question #15 What family forms -1 ions? Halogens

Question #16 It has been considered a family of one, and can carry properties of both metals and non-metals… Hydrogen

Question #17 A chemical formula tells us 3 things, what are they? The type of elements in a compund, the number of each atom present, and the type of compound (ionic or covalent) formed.

Question #18 How many atoms are in the following compound? 4Al 2 (CO 3 ) 3 Ensure to segment the compound and count the number of atoms of each element. Aluminum (Al) 8 Carbon (C) 12 Oxygen (O) 36 Total 56

Question #19 What type of elements make up an ionic compound? Non-metal + Metal

Question #20 In an ionic comound, what type of elements lose electrons and which type gains electrons? Metals lose electrons and are therefore positively charged (Cations). Non-metals gain electrons and are therefore negatively charged (Anions).

Question #21 Write the formula for the following ionic compound. Magnesium and Bromine MgBr 2

Question #22 Write the formula for the following ionic compound. Calcium and Nitride Ca 3 N 2

Question #23 Write the names for the following ionic compound. PbO 2 Lead (IV) Oxide

Question #24 Write the names for the following ionic compound. CuCl 2 Copper (II) Chloride

Question #25 Why do some ions have Roman Numerals in their name? Some transition metals can have more than one cation.

Question #26 Write the names for the following ionic compound. Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 Calcium Phosphate

Question #27 What is the prefix used for a covalent bond with 7 atoms of a single element? Hepta

Question #28 Name the following covalent compound. N2O4N2O4 Dinitrogen Tetroxide

Question #29 Write the covalent formula for the following. Tetrabromine Nonoxide Br 4 O 9

Question #30 What type of chemical reaction is the following? Al + Pb(NO 3 ) 2  Al(NO 3 ) 3 + Pb Single Replacement

Question #31 What type of chemical reaction is the following? CH 4 + 2O 2  CO 2 + 2H 2 O Combustion

Question #32 Balance the following equation AsCl + H 2 S  As 2 S 3 + HCl 2AsCl 3 + 3H 2 S  1As 2 S 3 + 6HCl

Question #33 Balance the following equation C 3 H 8 + O 2  3CO 2 + 4H 2 O C 3 H 8 + 5O 2  3CO 2 + 4H 2 O
