4 China decided to build an independent satellite navigation system in 1980’s. In 2003, the COMPASS navigation demonstration system was built and after that, the system has been used in many areas. Now the COMPASS global navigation system is under construction.

5 principles of the State Policy  Openness COMPASS will provide high quality public services free of direct user charge, and we encourage COMPASS use all over the world. China will communicate with other countries widely and deeply in the field of satellite navigation to promote compatibility and interoperability among GNSS, and push the advancement of world satellite navigation technology and industry.

6  Independency China will develop and operate COMPASS independently. COMPASS can provide services for users independently and higher quality services in Asia-Pacific region. principles of the State Policy

7  Compatibility COMPASS will pursue solutions to realize compatibility and interoperability with other satellite navigation systems in the framework of ICG and ITU, and users can get better services with interoperable receivers. Based on the protection of current users and industry, all users will enjoy the improvement of COMPASS navigation satellite system. principles of the State Policy

8  Gradualness To control the technical and economic risks, COMPASS will be developed step by step based on technology and economy level of China. And COMPASS will provide long-term continuous services for users, and incessantly improve system performance to realize seamless link and smooth transition of every phase. principles of the State Policy

10 Space Segment  5 GSO satellites and Not more than 30 MEO satellites Constellation GSO Satellite MEO Satellite

11 Ground Segment  The ground segment consists of Master Control Station, Upload Stations and Monitor Stations.

12 User Segment  The user segment consists of COMPASS user terminals and interoperable terminals. User terminals of COMPASS system

13 frequencies & signals  Frequencies B1,B1-2, B2, B3, B1-BOC, L5  Signals: B1(QPSK), B1-MBOC(6,1,1/11), B1-2 (QPSK), B2(QPSK), B2-BOC(10,5 ), B3(QPSK), B3BOC(15,2.5), L5 (QPSK).

14 Services  Two kinds of global services Open Service : free and open to users Positioning Accuracy: 10 m Timing Accuracy: 20 ns Velocity Accuracy: 0.2 m/s Authorized Service: ensure highly reliable use even in complex situation.

15 Services  Two kinds of regional services Wide area differential service : Positioning accuracy: 1 m short message service.

17  COMPASS Navigation Demonstration System. After 3 GEO satellites launched since 2000, the demonstration system can provide basic services including positioning, timing and short-message telecommunication. The 1st Step

18  COMPASS Navigation satellite system. As a global system COMPASS will cover Asia-Pacific area firstly about 2010. 2010 The near future The 2nd step

19  After extensive experiments, the technical configuration of COMPASS has been determined. Launched in Apr. 2007, the f irst MEO satellite of COMPASS is for system IOV and secures the frequency filings. The ground segment is ready, and constellation deployment is in the schedule. COMPASS-M1 Experimentation

20  Experiment result Orbit determination precision: about 5 meter Orbit prediction precision: about 10 meter (24 hours). Time synchronization precision: about 2ns. Clock prediction maximum errors: <20ns (24 hours). Compatible Positioning errors ( with GPS) : 10meter (95%). COMPASS-M1 Experimentation

21 Launches 2010 2011 …… 2009 Planed launches in recent two years  10 rockets of Long-March3 will be launched in recent two years, more than 10 satellites will be put into use, after that the system can offer services regionally.
