1 Working in collaboration with data centres Elizabeth Newbold, The British Library Presented at: DataCite Annual Conference Nancy France August 25, 2014

2 2 The British Library National Library of the United Kingdom created in 1972 by the British Library Act Receives one copy of every publication published in the UK and Ireland under Legal Deposit Collections cover all formats; sound, images, video, newspapers, maps, manuscripts, databases, books and journals, much more 3 million items incorporated into the collections every year Over 16,000 people use its collections every day Grows at 12km of shelving per year UK member of DataCite

3 3 The British Library and DataCite The British Library is one of the original founding members of DataCite (2009) In 2010/11 we started pilot projects with a small number of data centres From 2012 we moved from a pilot phase in to offering a full service in the UK and increased the number of participating data centres to 11 Slowly growing and as of today we have 22 organisations using the service (with more in the pipeline!) We provide the DataCite infrastructure in the UK, enabling data centres to ‘mint’ DOIs for data We work collaboratively with the research data community to provide advocacy and guidance on data citation
