Anne Frank is one of the most discussed Jews of the Holocaust. Anne was born on June 12, 1929. She had one older sister, Margot Frank. Her birthplace was Frankfurt am Main, Weimar Germany. Her name is Annelies Marie Frank, but she went by Anne.
Anne and her older sister Margot had many friends of nationalities. Their parents had taught them to respect and tolerate others. Anne’s parents came from respected German families.
On March 13, 1933, elections were held in Frankfurt for the municipal council, and Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party won. Antisemitic demonstrations began almost immediately, and the Franks began to fear what would happen if they remained in Germany. The Franks were among 300,000 Jews who fled Germany between 1933 and 1939.
Otto Frank (right) served in the German army during World War 1. Otto fled to Amsterdam to set up a business called Dutch Opekta Company. Later that year Edith, Margot, and Anne joined joined him.
By the mid-1930s the Franks settled into a normal routine in their apartment at 37 Merwedeplein. The girls attended school. The family took vacations to the beach and their circle of Jewish and non Jewish friends grew.
By 1942, Jews were being arrested for being Jews. Many were forced to got o German labor camps. Fearful for the lives, the Frank family began to go into hiding.
They already had a place in mind- an annex of rooms above Otto Frank’s office 263 Prinsengracht in Amsterdam.
