Anne's mother, the former Edith Holländer, was the daughter of a manufacturer. She had married Otto Frank in 1925. 3. She lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Born a German national, Frank lost her citizenship in 1941 when Nazi Germany passed the anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws. The Frank family moved from Germany to Amsterdam in 1933, the year the Nazis gained control over Germany. By the beginning of 1940, they were trapped in Amsterdam by the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the family went into hiding in the hidden rooms of Anne's father, Otto Frank's, office building. After two years, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. 4. Special Events Holocaust and World War ll In late February or early March of 1945, Margot died of typhus, followed just a few days later by Anne, also from typhus. Bergen- Belsen was liberated on April 12, 1945, just about a month after their deaths. It’s believed that Otto removed passages about Anne’s love affair with Peter van Pels, the 16-year-old son of Auguste and Hermann van Pels, who shared the Franks’ hiding annex in Amsterdam.
