STUDENT BASED LEARNING and SOCIAL STUDIES
Student based learning is very appropriate for the study of Social Studies and History. Student Based or Learner Centered classes do the following:
-Connect life experiences to the learner -Provide purposeful thinking for the learner -Usually include student products that demonstrate student learning Life experience Purposeful thinking Product
Examples of Student Based or Learner Centered Instruction Problem Based Learning- cooperatively working to find solutions to real life issues Example: What were the roles of men and women in colonial America and how did those roles influence family life?
INQUIRY BASED LEARNING Asking a question such as “Explain the convergence of three worlds?” or playing a game similar to “Twenty Questions” where the teacher or students make a thinking statement such as “I’m thinking about a form of government” and students ask yes or no questions to discover the correct response.
INDUCTIVE METHODS A series of unknown facts or questions and learners search out answers.
ROLE PLAY Student takes on the characteristics of someone else.
SIMULATION Creating a real life scenario in the classroom
