gustar

Gustar es un verbo raro Literally translated, gustar is to bring pleasure to. In English, we say to like to express a similar idea.

Gustar vs. To like In English, we say things like I like to eat apples. In Spanish, instead of saying that I am doing the liking, I say that eating apples pleases me.

Construction of gustar You have used gustar before to talk about activities that you like (or do not like) doing. I like to eat apples. Me gusta comer las manzanas.

Emphasis To emphasize that it is pleasing to whomever, we add to that construction the following: A mí me gusta comer las manzanas.

What about other people? If we are talking to another person informally, we change me to another pronoun: We change me to te: A ti te gusta comer las manzanas.

What about everyone else? If we are talking to someone formally or about someone else, we use le: A ___ le gusta comer las manzanas. We can fill in the blank with these types of subjects: Ud., ella, él otras personas (María, José, mi madre, etc.)

Clarification It is useful to use A ___ to clarify: A Pedro le gusta comer las manzanas....is much clearer than... Le gusta comer las manzanas.

What if someone asks you? If your friend or teacher asks you ¿A ti te gusta comer las manzanas? You can respond by saying: ¡Sí! A mí me gusta. A mí me gusta mucho (if you like it alot) A mí no me gusta (if you don't like it) Note that the no comes before me and after A mí.

In general... To ask Who likes to eat apples? we can use one of our trusty question words. ¿A quién le gusta comer las manzanas?
