7. o Oo Oo Oo Oil prices are rising rapidly. o Wo Wo Wo We have run out of fossil fuels, meaning we have no petrol to run our cars, buses, planes and even our lawn mowers. Did you know…?

8. What are fossil fuels? Fossil fuels, not only keep our cars running, but we also use it to generate electricity. If we want more fossil fuels, we are going to have to wait a few million years.

9. Lucky for us, scientists and researchers have already started thinking more into making bio-fuels Bio-fuels are made from biological ingredients instead of fossil fuels. These ingredients can range from corn, to soybeans to animal fats. Bio-fuels are renewable and non-toxic, therefore not harming the environment.

10. Bio-diesels are one of the major bio-fuels we use. Bio-diesels are usually made from plant oils or animal fats. In New Zealand, we have been slow to take up bio-diesel. This is because petroleum diesel has always been cheaper than petrol. However, this has begun to change. In mid- 2007 the New Zealand Government decided that, from April 2008, bio-fuels would form an increasing percentage of transport fuels. Biodiesel:

11. The Government’s target is to have 3.4% of all fuel sold by (oil companies) by 2012 be bio-fuel. Around 2006-07 the country was using 3,502 million litres of diesel a year. Bio-diesel New Zealand plans to increase its production to 70m litres of Bio-diesel a year, or around 2% of the country’s total diesel use and more than half of the Government’s 2012 target for bio-fuels use.

13. Animal Transport As well as using cars to get around, humans have always used animals as a form of transport.

14. In the air Pigeons are used to carry letters/mail. This is called pigeon- post. Because the heaviest living flying animals weighs about 20kg, humans cannot fly on an animal.
