Henry Swinburne He was born in Bristol on 8th July 1743, the fourth son of Sir John Swinburne of Capheaton, Northumberland, third baronet and head of an old Roman Catholic family. He was educated at Scorton School, near Catterick, Yorkshire and then he was sent to the monastic seminary of Lacelle in France. He afterwards studied at Paris, Bordeaux, and in the Royal Academy in Turin, devoting special attention to literature and art.

Swinburne in Italy An impossible interview between a student of the I.I.S.S. “D. Fioritto” and the writer  When did you first visit Italy?  It was in 1763, when I inherited a small estate at Hamsterley in Durham and an annuity which, combined with my patrimony, placed me in independent circumstances  When did you visit Southern Italy?  After visiting Marseilles, I proceeded by sea to Naples and travelled in the two Sicilies, where stayed for two years, 1777 and 1778.

 We know that your book " Travels in the two Sicilies” was fully appreciated in your country. Why?  One of the reasons of such a literary success must have been the detailed descriptions of the economic, geographical and historical aspects of the two Sicilies because my intention was to give an account of a real Tour and not an imitation of Sterne’s Sentimental Journey.  Were you aware that part of your route was “fresh land”?  Indeed, I was. I even visited the Gargano Region, about which almost no Englishman had ever written before.

 Was it easy at that time to travel and visit every corner of the two Sicilies?  It wasn’t so easy. Many topographical and marine charts of the country and coasts were wrong and didn’t give accurate information about the roads. For example, I realized later that the Gargano wasn’t part of the Appennines.  What was your first impression at seeing the Apulian territory?  The Puglian plains and the Adriatic sea appeared like horizontal stripes of different shades.  Did you travel alone?  I rode with just one servant.

 Did you visit Foggia?  Yes, I did. It was the principal town of the province of Capitanata but it had not walls, citadel or gates. It was neatly of white stone and had two or three good streets. Its custom-house was a handsome edifice.  Had you found any mention made of this place before the coming in of the Swabians?  I knew that Frederick II had built a fortress there and had taken great delight in this residence. His sixth wife, Isabella, daughter of John, king of England had died there in 1241.  What about the custom house?  It was one of the richest mines of wealth belonging to the crown of Naples. It had the distribution of a fixed assessment upon all sheep that descended in autumn from the mountains of Abruzzo, into the warm plains of Apulia.

 Was it an old institution?  We have the authority of Varro and others for ascribing the invention of this duty to the ancient Romans.  Was it easy to find accomodation in Foggia?  No it wasn’t. Allthe inns were occupied by people drawn there by the approaching Fair.  What was the next place you visited?  On the way to Manfredonia,I saw the rests of Arpi or Argyrpae, once the capital of a kingdom founded by Diomed after the siege of Troy. On the left, I also visited Apricena, founded by Frederick II and so called from two latin words meaning a wild boar and supper. In fact, Frederick II, who liked hunting, had caught a big wild boar there and made build a castle to celebrate the event.

 What about Manfredonia?  It was founded by Frederick II, too. He called together all the famous professors of astrology (a science in which both he and his father placed great confidence), and caused them to calculate the happiest hour and minute for laying the first stone.  How many people lived in Manfredonia at that time?  Just six thousand. Even if most of the corn exported from the province was shipped off there, and a direct trade carried on with Venice and Greece, the town didn’t seem to be a wealthy one.  The next place you visited was Monte Sant’Angelo, where did you stay there?  At the Carmelite Convent

 Did you visit the chapel of the Archangel Michael?  Yes, I did. There were little stones suspended on the branches of trees on the way there. It reminded me of a pagan tradition, consisting in suspending little masks or images on the branches of trees in honour of Bacchus.  What was the church like?  It was a damp gloomy grotto. They said it had been built on the identical spot where the spirit of the Archangel was said to have stood when it had appeared to Lorenzo Maiorano, bishop at the time of Pope GelasioI.  Did you return to Naples after visiting Monte Sant’Angelo?  No, I didn’t. Before leaving for Bari, I also visited Lucera.

 Had you ever heard of Lucera?  Yes, I knew that Frederick II had sent there many Mussulmen who were very faithful to the house of Swabia.  What do you think of Frederick II?  He was the most learned sovereign of the age, a poet, an author of some treatises on veterinian subjects. But, from the pontiff he had come to despise the faith, so I think he was “a latitudinarian in his religious opinons”.  I tkink it is enough for today, thank you very much for your disponibility Mr Swinburne.  You’re welcome. It is really a pleasure to help students in their school activities.
