2 Where is the Tidewater (Coastal Plain) Region located and what does the land look like?

3 The Tidewater Region is located east of the Fall Line, along the eastern coast of VA. The land is low and flat. An important feature of this region is the many rivers that rise and fall with the Atlantic ocean tides.

4 What is a peninsula? What peninsulas are present in the Tidewater Region?

5 A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides.
The Eastern Shore of VA is part of the Delmarva Peninsula, and four major rivers flowing across the Tidewater form three peninsulas.

6 Why were rivers important to early Virginians?

7 People had no cars, trucks, or railroads, so they depended on the rivers for transportation. Farmers could load their crops on boats to be shipped long distances. People traveled on the rivers to see other places.

15 The Fall Line is at the eastern edge of the Piedmont Region where the land drops down and rivers tumble onto the flat Tidewater land.

16 How did the Fall Line affect the growth of early Virginian settlements?

17 When ships carrying goods reached the Fall Line, they could travel no further. Goods going west had to be carried to the Fall Line for shipment and goods going east had to be unloaded at the Fall Line. So, markets and cities grew up along the Fall Line.
