Tidewater Region Piedmont Region Blue Ridge Mountain Region Valley and Ridge Region Appalachian Plateau Region Jeopardy!
Where is the Tidewater (Coastal Plain) Region located and what does the land look like?
The Tidewater Region is located east of the Fall Line, along the eastern coast of VA. The land is low and flat. An important feature of this region is the many rivers that rise and fall with the Atlantic ocean tides.
What is a peninsula? What peninsulas are present in the Tidewater Region?
A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. The Eastern Shore of VA is part of the Delmarva Peninsula, and four major rivers flowing across the Tidewater form three peninsulas.
Why were rivers important to early Virginians?
People had no cars, trucks, or railroads, so they depended on the rivers for transportation. Farmers could load their crops on boats to be shipped long distances. People traveled on the rivers to see other places.
Name four major rivers of Virginia and the cities that are located on each.
Potomac River- Alexandria Rappahannock River- Fredericksburg York River- Yorktown York River- Yorktown James River- Jamestown and Richmond
Name a product of the Tidewater Region. Name the industries of the Tidewater region.
Product: seafood Industries: shipbuilding, tourism, federal military installations
Where is the Piedmont Region located and what does the land look like?
The Piedmont Region is located west of the Tidewater and east of the Blue Ridge Mountain Region. The Piedmont is a plateau, meaning it is a large, high, almost level piece of land.
What is the Fall Line? Where is it located?
The Fall Line is at the eastern edge of the Piedmont Region where the land drops down and rivers tumble onto the flat Tidewater land.
How did the Fall Line affect the growth of early Virginian settlements?
When ships carrying goods reached the Fall Line, they could travel no further. Goods going west had to be carried to the Fall Line for shipment and goods going east had to be unloaded at the Fall Line. So, markets and cities grew up along the Fall Line.
In what Piedmont Region city did Ms.Szachowicz go to college?
Charlottesville (University of Virginia)
Name a product of the Piedmont Region. Name the industries of the Piedmont region.
Product: tobacco Industries: farming, textiles, technology, federal and state government
Where is the Blue Ridge Mountain Region located and what does the land look like?
The Blue Ridge Mountain Region is located west of the Piedmont and east of the Valley and Ridge Region. The Blue Ridge is a line of mountains and hills that run diagonally across Virginia.
What larger system of mountains is this region a part of? What is the highest mountain peak in Virginia?
Appalachian Mountain System Mt. Rogers
Name three of the Blue Ridge Mountain Region’s tourist attractions.
Shenandoah National Park Skyline Drive Blue Ridge Parkway
In what way did the Blue Ridge Mountains slow growth and development in the western part of Virginia?
The mountains formed a natural barrier that was difficult for settlers to cross.
Name a product of the Blue Ridge Mountain Region. Name the industry of the Blue Ridge Mountain Region.
Product: apples Industry: recreation
Where is the Valley and Ridge Region located and what does the land look like?
The Valley and Ridge Region is located west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and east of the Appalachian Plateau Region. It is made of ridges (line of mountains) separated by low valleys.
What two main areas make up the Valley and Ridge Region?
Allegheny Mountains Valley of Virginia
What about the Shenandoah Valley made it important to American Indians and European settlers?
American Indians used it as a natural highway for trade and hunting trips. Many Europeans were attracted to the Shenandoah Valley because of its beauty and fertile soil for farming.
Name three of the Valley and Ridge Region’s natural wonders. How were these created?
Natural Chimneys, Natural Tunnel, Natural Bridge, Cumberland Gap, Luray Caverns, Endless Caverns, Grand Caverns These natural wonders were formed from water wearing away rock over a long period of time. The soft rock wears away more quickly than harder rock, creating rock forms and gaps.
Name two products of the Valley and Ridge Region. Name the industry of the Valley and Ridge Region.
Products: poultry and apples Industry: farming
Where is the Appalachian Plateau Region located and what does the land look like?
The Appalachian Plateau is located west of the Valley and Ridge Region and is in the southwestern corner of Virginia. It is part of the Cumberland Plateau. Steep mountainsides drop into deep gorges (hollows).
What five states border Virginia? Bonus 100 points: Which of the bordering states does the Appalachian Plateau Region touch?
Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina Bonus: West Virginia and Kentucky
Why have no major cities developed in the Appalachian Plateau?
The region lacks (does not have) major rivers and good farmland.
How did the appearance of railroads in the 1800s change the economy (the producing and using of goods and services) of the Appalachian Plateau Region?
People were able to ship coal to distant places. Coal mining became a big business.
