1 Falcon Gridiron Report A publication intended for all alumni and friends of the UWRF Falcon Football Family VOLUME 2 MARCH 2012 FGR NOTE FROM THE COACH HEAD COACH MATT WALKER It has been a wild couple of months since our last edition. The time has been filled with the crazy grind of recruiting. Myself and the rest of the staff have been very busy getting in and out of high schools to talk to coaches and players, hosting on campus visit days, and spending countless hours on the phone trying to persuade kids to play for the Falcons. We think we are off to a great start with over 35 commitments before March and lots of time to continue working on some more. In addition to these incoming high school seniors that we will bring to WFCA HALL OF FAME 3 FALCONS TO BE INDUCTED The WFCA has released its 32 nd annual Hall of Fame induction class. This list of 21 inductees includes three members that have connections with our Falcon Family. NEWT GREASER served as offensive line coach here at RF from 1970 to 1988. He is a legendary coach and beloved person to all of his players and colleagues. Newt was recently inducted into our Falcon Hall of Fame last year JOHN PHELPS was an RF player and who had a hall of fame career as the head coach at Eau Claire North. He is now the principal at Mounds View. VERNE POTTINGER served as an assistant here at RF from 1970-1973. He would later serve as the head coach at Mauston (Belvedere, IL) where he would win an IL state championship. He also served as the head coach at Rice Lake where he earned a state runner up award. CONGRATULATIONS HALL OF FAMERS!!! KENNEDY NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR Jed Kennedy, of Kenosha Bradford High School, has been named the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association/Green Bay Packers Coach of the Year Jed is a 2001 RF alum and was a standout linebacker for our Falcons. He also began his coaching career here as an assistant in 2002. Kennedy recently completed his 5th season as the head coach of Kenosha Bradford. The Red Devils finished the 2011 season with a 14-0 record, capped off by a 7-0 win over Wisconsin Rapids in the WIAA Division 1 State Championship In recognition of the honor, the Packers, along with the Wisconsin National Guard, will award a $3,000 donation to the school's football program. Kennedy was presented with the award at the Packers home game against the Detroit Lions on Jan. 1, and honored on Jan. 29 at the WFCA All-State banquet in the Lambeau Field Atrium. After posting a 54-9 record at Kenosha Bradford, including a perfect 14-0 and state championship this past season, Jed has recently accepted the head coaching job at Pulaski High School. campus next Fall, we are happy to announce that we have seven mid-year transfers that will be with us this spring. All of these transfers are talented and have a chance for immediate impact. We have also been very busy following the success of our fellow Falcon teams. Both mens and womens basketball teams made the national playoffs. Both teams were ranked in the top 25 the majority of the season. The mens team finished second in the regular season and were crowned as champions of the WIAC year end tournament. This gave them a high enough seed to host the first round of the national playoffs. Womens hockey also had a phenomenal season winning the conference and advancing into the second round of the national playoffs. Spring Football is right around the corner and we are busy getting prepared. For those of you that do not know, the NCAA allows division III teams with 16 practice opportunities over a five week period. We are also not allowed to wear pads or incorporate large equipment or training aids of any kid. We push back the start of our spring season as long as we can due to weather. Therefore, in order to finish before final exams, our spring season runs basically the month of April. Lastly, we want to thank those of you that have already registered for this years golf outing. As many of you know, we had over 100 golfers last year and are expecting way more than that this year. If you have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. This has become a gigantic event and a great chance to celebrate Falcon Football. Take care and Go Falcons! www.uwrfsports.com
