Exciting Developments 2008 n n EM Experiential Learning in Action: “All the lessons they have learned in the classroom became very real for students Wednesday in [ATU’s] Emergency Administration and Management (EAM) program when they participated in tornado damage relief efforts in Atkins. Approximately 30 Tech EAM students reported to the Wilson J. Matthews Civic Center in Atkins at 6 a.m. Wednesday to help local authorities conduct preliminary damage assessments following a tornado that affected more than 40 homes and took the lives of at least three residents in the Pope County community Tuesday night.” (The Courier, 7Feb08)

The program combined both theoretical training as well as practical. The EADP Program is one of the oldest programs for Emergency Management Professionals in the country. When I graduated I did not start out on the bottom of the job market; I got my first position with a regional government in Texas. Two years later I became an Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator for one of the wealthiest cities in America. Personally the people I hung out with in class are the people I compete against for employment. Which is a plus when you go to a conference and it’s a class reunion.
