Ramsey County GIS:
3
Introductions Name Department What you are doing and/or hope to do with GIS What do you hope to get out of this User Group?
4
Ramsey County Internal GIS Technical User Group
5
Technical User Group
6
THIS IS YOUR USER GROUP!! For anyone: New to GIS Experienced in GIS Interested in finding out more about GIS We see new users as a valuable additional resource! Improve communication Increase effectiveness of GIS county-wide both internally and externally by having an internal working group Individuals will benefit on-the-job by using GIS as a tool Encourage collaboration and partnerships Provide a learning environment: Hands-On Training Project demonstrations, presentations, etc
7
Technical User Group Presentations for users by users Increase awareness of technical and data resources Encourage discussion Identify data needs Form special-interest workgroups Example: Emergency Preparedness
8
Technical User Group Initially, meetings will be held on a bi-monthly basis…will adjust as needed This is YOUR User Group!! An idea to consider: Split this group into two subgroups: New Users Experienced Users Meet for 1-2 hours First half hour: Entire Technical User Group meets together Second half hour: Subgroups meet to come up with recommendations for the entire group Third half hour: Entire group comes together and discuss recommendations
9
History and Development of Ramsey County GIS David Claypool, P.L.S. Ramsey County Surveyor
10
Three Land Surveyors… and one other guy
11
Ramsey County GIS 2 primary goals: To create a basemap and database that was as accurate as possible To build a GIS collaboratively
12
It’s all about COLLABORATION! Collaborative efforts will help to ensure your success We ALL benefit by working together Sharing knowledge of available data and the process to obtain it is valuable to all of us
13
Collaboration What you could end up looking like if you choose to do GIS on your own!!
14
Ramsey County GIS Administrative Group

Ramsey County’s GIS Licensing ALL Ramsey County Digital Base GIS Data is licensed! Please become familiar with the conditions of use It cannot be freely distributed to anyone outside of Ramsey County or the Ramsey County GISUG If you have a 3 rd -party working on a project for you Requests for data must go through the GIS Office Contact: David Wilford via email or phone (266-2604) A signed license agreement must be completed before data will be distributed
27
Where we’re going… Curt Peterson, GIS Supervisor
28
Where we are now: Current Data Access Model GIS users must physically move update data to their own desktops or servers Monthly CD updates FTP sites: RCGISUG – Password protected Public – Anonymous login Time consuming Danger of utilizing data that isn’t current
29
Where We’re Going : Enterprise GIS What is an Enterprise GIS System? Centralized data resource Contains both graphical and tabular data
30
Why move to an Enterprise GIS System? Provides County wide functionality. Simplifies data layer maintenance/updating Serves a wider range of county needs. More efficient data distribution Opportunity to be a direct node on the MetroGIS Data Café Opportunity for participation among multiple departments. Promotes shared vision, collaboration and development.

Where We’re Going Transition from ArcView3 and Arc/Info7 to ArcGIS Migration of data Creation of new applications Building database schemas Data compatibilities And other behind the scene GIS functions… At least a one year project
36
Training Carla Coates, GIS Analyst
37
Training Sessions – Quick Start Designed to get you going For those new to GIS For those transitioning from ArcView 3 to ArcGIS-ArcView 8 Software specific: ArcGIS 8 (ArcView8) Utilize county data Examples based on what you may need to do for your job
38
Training Sessions – Quick Start Designed to supplement other training ESRI – Minneapolis Office (Eagan) www.esri.com ESRI Partners Rowekamp Associates http://www.rowekamp.com/ ESRI On-line training modules www.esri.com

Demonstration: RCGISUG’s On-Line Mapping Application Carla Coates, GIS Analyst
42
Demonstration: RCGISUG’s On-Line Mapping Application Web address: http://maps.metro-inet.us/RamseyCoGIS/DisclaimerRCPublic.htm Project was developed by and is maintained and paid for by the Ramsey County GIS User Group Meetings held the first Thursday of every month Let Carla know if you’d like to be added to their email distribution list Presentation by David Windle, City of Roseville and one of the founders of the RCGISUG at upcoming meeting Created with Ramsey County GIS Layers
43
Demonstration: RCGISUG’s On-Line Mapping Application Objective: Provide free user-friendly access to Ramsey County GIS data (and other data sources) to anyone with an internet connection A GREAT way to become familiar with Ramsey County’s ‘Base Data’ HOMEWORK: Noodle around the On-line mapping application and make a map!
