 The California gold rush was well under way  People were migrating west to make it rich in the mountains of California  Russian geologist Pet Doroshin reported gold deposits in the Kenai Peninsula  The rumors of gold spread south to California and attracted people to Alaska

 Between 1861 and 1872 Gold had been located in Southeast Alaska this created the first gold district in Alaska, Cassiar Gold District  The first mining district was created in Sitka in May 1879 after other smaller gold discoveries were made

 In 1880 Alaskan Native Chief Kowee led prospector Joe Juneau and Richard Harris to a area north of Ft. Wrangell.  They found gold  News spread and thousands rushed from the Mountains of Oregon and California  The town of Juneau was found  In 1882 John Treadwell located gold on Douglas Island and created the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company in 1887  Made $67 million in gold  Employed over 2,000 people at its peak

 In 1896 George Washington Carmack, Tagish Charlie Mason, and Skookum Jim Mason discovered gold in Canada  Word of the discovery did not spread outside Alaska until 1897, but when it did people flooded to Alaska  Over 80,000 people rushed to strike it rich  By the time most people reached Dawson the profitable claims had already been staked

 Seattle, Washington was the last city prospectors usually saw before heading north to the Klondike  ChilkootTrail  White Pass Trail  All Water Yukon River route  Valdez Glacier Trail  1/3 rd of the people who attempted to reach Dawson turned around

 In 1899 word reached the Klondike gold field that gold had been discovered on the Seward Peninsula  8,000 people left the Klondike in one week heading for Nome  As with the Klondike most claims were taken by the time people reached Nome  In 1899 Gold was also discovered on the beaches of Nome, making it easier to find.  Between 1899 and 1910 over $46 million had been taken from Nome

 In July 1902 Felix Pedro found gold in the Tanana Hills  This led directly to the founding of Fairbanks  Gold in Fairbanks was different than the others  It was buried deep below Permafrost  Fairbanks proved to be more profitable than many gold mines including the Klondike

 What Effect did the Gold Rush have on the Natives?  What was life like in the mining camps?  What supplies were mandatory for prospectors to have to go into the Klondike?

 Did everyone make it rich? Why or Why not?  What occupations did people make money on other than gold mining?  List 3 things/questions you found interesting about the Gold rush
