Newspaper Overview Topic: A Sad Anniversary September 11, 2001 (9/11), was a sad day in America; thousands of people died in terrorist attacks. Now, ten years later, we remember the day and honor the victims. We can thank first responders, who help us during emergencies. A new memorial and museum opening in New York City will be a permanent reminder of 9/11. ULS Overview Topic: Government Governments in cities and towns hire first responders to keep citizens safe in emergencies. First responders are trained to help people in emergencies like fires, auto accidents or health crises. They are authority figures we should cooperate with to stay safe. A Sad Anniversary September 5, 2011 What is an emergency? An emergency is a problem that can happen suddenly and needs quick action. An emergency might be when a person is very sick or badly injured. It might be when a home is in danger, such as from a fire. A car accident could be another emergency. This girl is waiting with firemen during an emergency. What should you do when you have an emergency? Find an adult and calmly tell them about the problem. If it is an emergency, the adult may call the emergency phone number: If no adult can help, you may need to call yourself. The dispatcher will answer the phone call and send the help you need. 9-1-1 dispatchers are ready to send you help. When you call 9-1-1, a dispatcher will answer the call. The dispatcher will usually send an EMT with an ambulance, a police office or fire fighter with a truck. These helpers are called first responders and have a lot of training and practice for emergencies. Be sure to answer any questions the first responders have. Emergencies can be scary, but the first responders know what to do. First responders come ready to help with many emergencies. You can call if someone is sick or injured. The dispatcher can send an ambulance with EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians). EMTs can help when someone is having a medical emergency at home or anywhere else. They come when people have accidents, heart attacks, breathing problems, broken bones and more. The EMTs can take the patient to the hospital in an ambulance if they need more help. EMTs will take this woman to a hospital for more care. You can call if you need the help of police officers. Police officers learn all about the law. They are trained to protect people and property. They can stop people who try to hurt others. You can call if you need the help of firefighters. Firefighters can help if you have a fire at home or anywhere else. They also rescue people trapped in burning buildings and treat their injuries. They rescue people stuck in cars or trucks after an accident. Firefighters get training and have special equipment to help in many situations. Firefighters rescue people and animals.
