Newspaper Overview Topic: The Lorax Movie The Dr. Seuss story, The Lorax, is also a new 3D movie, opening March 2. In the movie, 12 year-old Ted goes to someone called the Once-ler to find why there are no trees in his town. The Once-ler tells Ted that he cut down all the fuzzy Truffula trees to make popular clothing called Thneeds. The movie has a message for everyone: protect the environment. ULS Overview Topic: History Many families enjoy reading books together, such as The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. Each state has a state tree; The Lorax movie is about trees and the environment. The National Education Association started Read Across America. This organization, also called the NEA, is an American teachers’ group. In 1997, the NEA began working on ways to celebrate a very important activity: reading. The Read Across America program includes ways to celebrate reading all year round. The NEA proclaimed March 2, 1998, the first Read Across America Day. March 2 is the birth date of author Theodor Seuss Geisel, or Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss wrote his first children’s book, And to Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937. Since that time, many children have enjoyed Dr. Seuss’ books. Dr. Seuss’ books making reading fun, with their fun, rhyming stories and their colorful pictures. Read Across America has been celebrated each year since 1998. Local heroes may be invited into schools to read to students on Read Across America Day. Students may race to see who can read the most books. Teachers may plan special activities around the class’ favorite stories.
