Macquarie University Questnet Presentation QUT Garden Point Campus 1 February 2011

Macquarie University Macquarie Network Onenet 600 – 700 physical switches Onenet Wireless 600 Access Points Onenet Anywhere VPN Access

Macquarie University Network Access for Staff and Students Do we charge? No we don’t……………….. Why not? VC wants to differentiate MQ Encourage students to enroll at MQ CIO also supports no charging for access – we are a learning institution, and the Internet is a learning tool

Macquarie University What we used to have…….. Unauthenticated access Anyone could access Internet for free at MQ Campus was on the Internet (137.x.x.x)!

Macquarie University Not anymore…….. Campus using private address (10.x.x.x) All staff and students now need to authenticate on the wired and wireless network using OneID

Macquarie University How do we manage or control who accesses what? Right now we don’t…….

Macquarie University THOSE LETTERS! Received approx 70 since early 2009. “..used to come thick and fast on the 137 address scheme”…….. Mark Silva, Risk Manager, Macquarie University. “Since Onenet was completed we now receive 1 per month”…… Mark Silva, Risk Manager, Macquarie University. “This is not only due to Onenet, but also due to various things including outright blocking via Sophos of bit torrent etc” …… Mark Silva, Risk Manager, Macquarie University

Macquarie University THOSE LETTERS! What Action do we take? None……”Presently (as per the current policy) we can’t even slap anyone on the wrist”…… Mark Silva, Risk Manager, Macquarie University ”we are trying to get the new Acceptable Use Policy ‘up’. In that, culpability for staff would be via the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement, and for students, via the Student Discipline Committee”…… Mark Silva, Risk Manager, Macquarie University

Macquarie University Have been trialing a couple of products during the latter part of 2010 – Contentkeeper and Exinda Recently purchased Exinda to monitor traffic utilisation, and allow us to see who is doing what. Moved the Exinda device to internal network so that we can identify local IP’s.

Macquarie University Soon we will start rate limiting traffic, e.g. Bittorrent.
