It Isn’t Easy Being Green LEED n Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design SUSTAINABLE RENEWABLE

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Education “Going Green” 2006 - The first LEED Silver certified elementary school in Canada, Thomas L. Wells Scarborough Ontario, is the first of a new generation of high performance 'green-schools' in Toronto. The school is designed to create a stimulating environment that is conducive to learning, with plenty of natural light, and a sense of community for students and local residents.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Solar Hot Water Systems Solar Photo Voltaic Panels

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Solar Photo Voltaic Panels Karen Tapia-Andersen / Los Angeles Times – Spring 2008 Solar power panels are placed atop a parking lot at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park. The photovoltaic farm is expected to last at least 40 years and is currently producing about 45% of the college’s energy, or 1.9 million kilowatts annually for a yearly savings of $270,000.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green 2007 - Tarkington School of Excellence is the first school in Chicago IL to be built under guidelines for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Green roofs can offer a range of benefits including: Reduced storm water runoff and improved storm water quality. Extended life span of roofing system Reduced sewer costs. Improved air quality and reduced heat island effect. Reduced noise levels. Improved aesthetics for building occupants and neighbors GREEN ROOFS

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Water Conservation Testing of Water Based Fire Protection System?

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Energy Conservation Harvesting Natural Sunlight - Plastic Roof Lights

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable” Fuels Hydrogen Fuel Cells Bio-Mass Ethanol/Biodiesel

It Isn’t Easy Being Green SO WHAT IS THE HAZARD? Beware of the Dark Side of Green Technologies

It Isn’t Easy Being Green On March 10, 2008, the Government announced further details of the greenhouse gas emissions regulations of the Turning the Corner plan putting into place one of the toughest regulatory regimes in the world to meet its target of reducing greenhouse gases an absolute 20% from 2006 by 2020. Government Actions

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Windstorm Hazards - Mechanical Over-speed Hazards Fire Hazards Wind Power

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Solar Power Windstorm Hazards Collapse Hazards Hail Damage Hazards Wind Blown Debris

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Green Construction – Roofs/Walls Not FM Approved Windstorm Hazards/ Wind-Borne Debris Hail Damage Hazards Collapse Hazards – Ponding - Earthquake

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Green Construction – Roofs/Walls FM Approved roof systems are validated to withstand worst case geographic wind forces and hail exposure which maintains the building shell intact during storm conditions and eliminates wind- borne debris from the roof system. FM Data Sheets provide specific guidance for proper installation of roof systems.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Green Construction – Roofs/Walls Exterior Fire Hazards Vegetated Roofs EIFS Interior Fire Hazards EIFS and Cavity Wall Construction

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Green Construction – Roofs/Walls FM Approved roof coverings are Class 1 rated or Non-Combustible for both protection against external and internal roof system fire hazards. FM Approved Exterior Wall Constructions, Plastic Building Panels, and Insulated Core Walls are Class 1 rated. FM Approved Exterior Wall Constructions also have wind load ratings applicable to specific geographic areas

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Green Construction – Walls EIFS Fire on High Rise Hotel - 2008 Cavity Wall Fire on High Rise Hotel 2007

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Fire Protection Water Conservation Requirements in California to de-chlorinate fire protection water discharge to storm sewer systems (fire pump testing). U.S. State EPA Departments requiring designated permits to discharge non-potable water from sprinkler systems or fixed water supplies onto the ground or into storm water systems. Australian Fire Protection Testing Standards.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Energy Conservation – Skylights FM Global Concerns Plastic skylights can represent both an interior and exterior fire hazard (Acrylic and Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic). Tempered glass or polycarbonate skylights are recommended. All skylights subject to damage from wind driven debris. Plastic skylights subject to deterioration from sunlight UV exposure.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green Energy Conservation – Plastic Roof Lights Fireworks Ignites FRP Skylight Fireworks ignited the FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) roof mounted skylight at this warehouse causing the fire to spread into the building. Automatic sprinklers below the skylight controlled the fire. $850,000 Physical Damage $-0- Lost Business Roofing Contractor Causes Skylight Fire Roofing contractors working on a medical products warehouse ignited the roof covering which spread the fire to an acrylic skylight. Automatic sprinklers and employee action prevented the fire from spreading to the warehouse storage. $450,000 Physical Damage $-0- Lost Business

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Hydrogen Hydrogen - No NRTL testing/certification protocol Fuel tanks fixed to equipment which can be metal or composite (plastic). High pressure operation (>1000 – psi). Represent fire and explosion hazards.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Biomass Combustible dust hazards. Solid fuel transfer system fire hazards (rubber belt conveyors). Potential incompatibility of some biomass fuels with heating design (switch-grass and stoker boilers). Introduces industrial process hazards into non-industrial facilities

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Biomass Biomass – New Technology for Non-Industrial Locations - Two small hospitals in northern Quebec (La Sarre and Macamic), modified their multi-fuel steam boilers to accept solid fuels (wood chips). The solid fuel is located 30-ft below grade to prevent freezing. New Hazards - Dust Hazards – Fuel Burner Control Hazards – Fuel Transfer System Hazards.

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Biodiesel Long Term Storage Technology Not Developed. Possible fuel corrosion issues. Biodiesel is a *flammable liquid (* FM Global definition of flammable liquid is any liquid with a Fire Point.)

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Biodiesel Biodiesel production in High schools???????

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Biodiesel Personal Biodiesel ProductionIndustrial Biodiesel Pilot Plant

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Biodiesel North Dakota plant destroyed by fire posted Sept. 8, 2008 at 3:14 p.m. CST A recent fire at All-American Biodiesel's plant in York, N.D., destroyed a quarter of the business and has brought to light a dangerous situation that could be repeated in rural communities throughout the United States. About three years ago, the town’s former school house was purchased by All- American Biodiesel with the intent of converting it to a 5 MMgy soy/canola-based biodiesel production facility. Randy Silliman, mayor of York, saw the potential hazards and argued for the plant’s location to be denied. “I just thought that it needed to be farther than 50 feet from businesses and residents.” Silliman said the state fire code allows industrial businesses to operate just 50 feet from private residences. Unless towns pass zoning regulations or ordinances, there is nothing preventing businesses that use hazardous chemicals from operating within city limits. According to Silliman, most small towns, including York, don’t have regulations “because we trust everybody.”

It Isn’t Easy Being Green “Renewable (Opportunity)” Fuels - Biodiesel Biodiesel and methanol are flammable liquids and need to be protected as such. Basic flammable liquid protection includes: Detached structure - Minimum 1-hour rated cutoff construction and full room floor liquid containment. Wet pipe automatic sprinkler protection. Steel piping systems/fittings for flammable liquid transfer. Automatic fire actuated shutoff systems. Positive displacement pumps. Steel tanks to API or U.L. Requirements. Proper Ventilation, Electrical, Bonding/Grounding. Design to FM Global Standards.
