1 Definitions: innovation, entrepreneurship  Flexible terms that have specific meaning to policy community.  Innovation (NOT invention) – novelty to PRACTICE!  Entrepreneur – person (team) responsible for the transition to practice.  More than products, processes, or even business.

2 Why graduate training  A KOWLEDGE ECONOMY …..  “The (innovative) entrepreneuria l society –  no longer just patents and spin-off firms (20% of the job)!  Entrepreneurial thinking to complete “human capital”.

3 What mechanisms:  Don’t interefere with primary commitments (not degree programs except for a few ‘specialists’).  Range of “events” from guest lectures in programs to short courses. – structured to reach a broad audience.  Courses combine overview and orientation with engagement of innovators and entrepreneurs and participatory activities.  THE UNVERSITY CAN DO THIS AT MODEST COST!

4 Hurdles  Persuading faculty leadership across campus of the importance of this initiative.
