2 Dementia Standards Launched June 2011 Empower people with dementia and their carers in asserting their rights Provide consensus on the level of quality people with dementia should expect from their local service Inform the commissioning,provision, scrutiny and inspection of services Drive up quality!

3 Strategy key service delivery area We will work to improve the response to dementia in general hospital settings,including through alternatives to admission and better planning for discharge

6 What do the standards say about general hospitals? All the standards apply but specifically… Systems are in place so staff can easily identify someone with dementia who may need extra support Access for advice/assessment to liaison service specialising in diagnosis and management of dementia Systems in place to request,record and share key information about the person Guidelines on the management of delirium are available…

7 What do the standards say about general hospitals? Systems are in place to monitor the number of moves people with dementia are subject to….. Regular audit of the physical environment and appropriate action taken Discharge planning arrangements will consider a range of care and support options. Robust procedures are in place to review decisions taken to transfer someone with dementia who previously lived at home to a care home.

8 Other key dementia standards for general hospitals Diagnosis and post diagnosis treatment, support and information To be treated with dignity and respect Receive treatment that is in line with the law Review of psychoactive medication Involvement of carers Care towards the end of life

9 HIS Inspections All acute hospitals Assess compliance with HAI standards 2008,clinical standards for older people in acute care 2002,clinical standards for food, fluid and nutritional care 2003 Self-assessment and inspection visits Will include general hospital specific dementia standards Test inspections October 2011

10 MWC Incorporate standards into visiting programme Repeat of 2010 visits? Themed visits Unannounced visits Joint working with HIS/Care Inspectorate
