2. What is tourism? Tourism is when people spend money in other places while they are visiting there. This can be done on a vacation or it can be done when people are traveling for business, visiting families that live far away, or when people are attending concerts or sporting events. People spend lots of money on food, lodging, and entertainment. They also spend money on gas!!!

3. Tourism developed in SC as a result of the efforts of both entrepreneurs and the state government who promoted the historic city of Charleston, the state’s beautiful beaches and mountains, and the wealth of sites of historic significance. After WWII, there was a significant increase in tourism in SC. The increasing number of automobiles and the completion of the interstate highway system allowed people to travel within and to the state more easily.

4. Hotels and fast food restaurants followed the building of the highways and resort development provided many reasons for tourists to visit SC. The coast became very popular tourist spots. Historic sites seek to preserve the cultural, geographic, and historical legacy of the state.
