4 What is a PSA? Public Service Announcement (PSA) An ad on TV, radio, or in print that advocates good citizenship or civic duty Deals with “… a significant public problem for which a solution can be offered through advertizing.” (Ad Council) Emphasizes individual action Places where you might see PSAs: – TV TV – radio radio – magazines magazines – grocery bags – online – outdoor posters (taxi, bus, stadium signs, billboard) outdoor posters

5 The Ad Council Founded in 1942 Private, nonprofit Largest provider of PSAs in the US One of the top ten advertisers in the US

6 The Ad Council Mission: “To identify a select number of significant public issues and stimulate action on those issues through communications programs that make a measurable difference in our society” (The Ad Council)

7 The Ad council “Today, the Ad Council organizes and defines its public service campaigns around three key themes: health & safety, education, and community, with a special emphasis on children.” (The Ad Council)

8 Positive Campaigns Drunk Driving Prevention: started in 1983. Since then, 68% of Americans say they have tried to stop someone from drunk driving. Drunk Driving Prevention Emergency Preparedness: Ready.gov received more than 27 million hits since launch of its campaign in 2003. Emergency Preparedness Childhood Obesity Prevention: In 6 months, there were over 140,000 hits to the website, and 1,500 children registered for the online challenge.
