3 ANCIENTCHINA Look at the photo of the Great Wall of China on p The wall was a project of Shi Huangdi, an emperor of China's Qin dynasty who lived in the third century BC. Note that it ranges from 13 to 40 feet wide and from 20 to 50 feet high and winds about 1,500 miles, marking what was then China's northern border. Speculate why early Chinese might have built such a wall and what it suggests about their culture.
