2 What is ENERGY STAR? ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program that helps consumers identify energy- efficient products. ENERGY STAR qualified products: Save energy Save money Save the environment

About ENERGY STAR The ENERGY STAR mark ranks among the highest level of influence on product purchase among all consumer emblems, similar in ranking to the Good Housekeeping Seal. 3

ENERGY STAR Qualified Programmable Thermostat Criteria 4 ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostats are energy management systems for the home and are generally shipped with a pre-set energy saving program that: Has both a weekday and weekend option Allows at least four different temperatures to be set at different times of the day Must be accurate within +/-2 degrees Includes a feature to reduce the amount of auxiliary heat from a multi- stage heat pump Must match existing heating/cooling equipment cycle rate

5 ENERGY STAR qualified products use less energy and cost less to operate resulting in: Saving Energy Equals Saving Money The average home spends $2,000 a year on utility bills, about half of that going to heating and cooling. With proper use, programmable thermostats can save about $180 every year in energy costs.

Programmable Thermostat Proper Use Guidelines 6 Follow proper use guidelines to help keep your home comfortable and save you money. Keep the temperature set at the energy saving set points when no one is home or through the night (periods of at least 8 hours). Dont consistently over-ride the pre-programmed settings, which results in more energy use and higher utility bills. Be sure to set your thermostat on an efficient hold or vacation setting when going away for a few days. Choose a setting several degrees warmer in the summer and several degrees cooler in the winter.

Proper Use Guidelines 7 Cranking your unit up to 90 degrees or down to 40 degrees does not heat or cool your house any faster. Install your thermostat on an interior wall, away from heating or cooling vents. If your home has multiple heating or cooling zones, use a programmable thermostat for each zone to maximize comfort and savings. Dont forget to change the batteries each year.

8 Saving Energy Helps Protect the Environment If just one household in 10 bought ENERGY STAR qualified heating and cooling equipment, the change would prevent annual greenhouse gas emissions of 14 billion pounds, equivalent to the emissions of almost 1.2 million cars.
