2 There are several ways to speak in the past, and one way is in the imperfect tense, or imparfait. To find the imperfect stem of a verb with the exception of être, one will have to use the nous form of the verb minus the –ons. Then, add the endings associated with the subject. je -ais nous -ions étais étions tu -ais vous -iez étais étiez elle/il -ait ils/elles -aient était étaient
