2 Early Life Born on July 10, 1871 in Auteuil, France Full name Valentin Louis Georges Eugéne Marcel Proust Family was well known and wealthy Nervous and sickly child Had 1st asthma attack at age 9

3 Education Enrolled in the Lycèe Condorcet Took a break after 2 years of study with a year of military service Returned to study law and philosophy

4 Early Work 1892-1893: Wrote short stories and articles for the journals Le Banquet and La Revue Blanche 1896: First published book- Les Plaisirs et les jours 1899: Abandons first attempt at a major work

5 Struggle For Inspiration 1903: His father dies, followed by his mothers death 2 years later Stricken with grief he ends up in a sanatorium for little less than 2 months Continues writing articles and short stories 1909: Starts work on novel

6 In Search of Lost Time Started working on it in 1909 Found great inspiration from tea and toast which reminded him of his youth in his grandfathers garden Worked on it until his death Contained 7 Volumes

8 In Search of Lost Time (Cont.) Contained more than 2,000 characters Main character was named Marcel, but it is not based on Prousts life Known for its emphasis on memories rather than on the plot itself

9 Death Died on November 18, 1922 Death caused by pneumonia 3 remaining volumes were edited by brother, Robert, and published posthumously
