The Junior College offers a two-year course specifically designed for future university students. While providing formal instruction, the College encourages students to develop their own initiative through guided self-teaching in preparation for their future university career. A candidate may be admitted to the Junior College if he/she is in possession of SIX passes in the Secondary Education Certificate or, when applicable their equivalent, at Grade 5 / C or better. The subjects must include Maltese, English Language, Mathematics and at least one of Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Students may choose from a wide range of subjects which are grouped into four areas of study as follows: Group 1 - Maltese, Arabic, English, French, Greek, Italian, Latin, German, Russian* and Spanish**. (*) Offered at Advanced Level only (**) Intermediate course may be offered depending on number of applicants. Group 2 - Marketing+, Accounting+, Economics+, Geography, History, Philosophy, Religious Knowledge and Sociology. + not more than two of Accounting, Economics and Marketing may be chosen Group 3 - Applied Mathematics (Mechanics), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Pure Mathematics and Environmental Science+. + Environmental Science is only offered at Intermediate Level and may not be taken with Biology, Chemistry or Physics Group 4 - Art, Computing+, Information Technology+, Music, Engineering Drawing++, Graphical Communication++, Home Economics and Human Ecology. + Computing may not be taken with Information Technology ++ Engineering Drawing may not be taken with Graphical Communication ++ Engineering Drawing and Graphical Communication are combined at Intermediate Level Students are required to choose one subject from each of Groups 1, 2 and 3 and two other subjects from any of the four groups. Two of the five subjects chosen must be at Advanced Level and three at Intermediate Level, as well as Systems of Knowledge which is compulsory.  Subjects chosen should also include any Special Course Requirements needed for their prospective University course. The Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School provides courses for students who intend to continue their studies at a higher level or to seek employment. This school aims to make further academic studies at post-secondary level accessible to students who choose not to enroll at other post-secondary institutions. It offers a blend of Ordinary, Intermediate and Advanced Level Courses suited to the individual needs of the student. Only students who have completed Form Five of Secondary Education are eligible to enroll. This course is intended for students who want to better their O-level grades. Students may select three or more O-level subjects. This course does not entitle the student to receive a stipend. 11 HIGHER SECONDARY GIOVANNI CURMI Advanced/Ordinary Level Course
This course is intended for students who want to follow a course of studies at Advanced and Ordinary Level to improve their career opportunities. This course does not lead to University. Students can opt for a minimum of three and a maximum of six subjects, one of which must be at Advanced Level. Duration: 1 year full-time for Ordinary Level Studies and 2 years full-time for Advanced Level Studies. Entry: SEC/O level passes in not less than four subjects. Matriculation Certificate Examination Course This course is intended for those students who would like to sit for the Matriculation Certificate Examination of the University of Malta. Students must take two subjects at Advanced Level, three at Intermediate Level, the failed subject at O level and Systems of Knowledge. Students are advised to consult the special course requirements concerning the course that they intend to follow as undergraduates. Students can choose from the following subjects: Accounting, Arabic, Art and Art History, Biology, Business Studies, Computing, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, French, Geography, German, History, Home Economics, Italian, Maltese, Marketing, Mathematics, P.E., Philosophy, Physics, Religion, Social Studies, Sociology, Spanish and Technical Drawing. The Institute of Tourism Studies provides vocational education in the field of Hospitality, enabling students to enter their chosen industry at all levels. In order to achieve these goals, the institute: Provides opportunities for work experience in the industry Recreates actual working environments on campus Provides training in a comprehensive range of practical skills Develops and enhances the intellectual ability of its students through a wide range of academic subjects Teaches generic skills essential for a smooth transition into the world of work. In most cases, at ITS, finishing one course successfully would give you the opportunity to follow other courses of a more advanced level within the institute. The Institute of Tourism Studies organises other courses which Fifth Formers cannot follow because they cannot satisfy all the necessary requirements. Food Preparation & Service (Foundation Level) The Food Preparation and Service programme of studies is designed to equip students with multiple skills in basic Food Preparation and Production and in Food and Beverage Service. The programme provides a broad introduction to the theory and practical sides of food preparation and food service, giving the necessary knowledge and practical experience to operate as a front line worker in a kitchen environment of a typical service outlet. Duration: Two semesters full-time followed by a 14 week Local Industrial Trade Practice. Entry: SEC/O level passes in any two subjects. Preference will be given to students having passes in languages, Mathematics, Home Economics and ECDL full Certificate. The minimum age for applicants is 16 as on the 30 th June. The Restaurant Operations programme of studies is designed to equip students with the basic skills in Food and Beverage Service. This programme prepares future Supervisors / Head of Department for a career in the hotel and catering industry. Duration: 4 semesters full-time in addition to one summer Local Industrial Trade Practice of fourteen weeks duration between semesters 2 & 3. Entry: A minimum APL/APEL score of seventy credits. English Language, Mathematics, Maltese and ECDL full certificate are compulsory subjects. Accounting, Home Economics, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Economics, Geography and any other language are the preferred subjects. Extended Skill Training Scheme (Hospitality Trades) The Institute of Tourism Studies in collaboration with the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC), organizes the following programmes of studies within the Extended Skill Training Scheme (ESTS). Food Preparation and Service Restaurant/Bar Operations General Assistance Those who complete the apprenticeship will be eligible for a Trade Test. If successful they will be awarded the Journeyman’s Certificate at Craftsman Level in the trade. Duration: These courses run over 4 semesters. Apprentices attend the institute full time for the first semester. For the second, they attend for 2 days and spend the other 3 days in industry. During the summer between semesters 2 and 3 these apprentices work a 40 hour week. As from the third semester they attend for 1 day at the ITS and 4 days in industry. Entry: School Leaving Certificate which confirms completion of Form V. Applicants will be interviewed and assessed on their language and numeracy skills and aptitude for a career in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry. Introduction The Institute of Health Care offers courses for those who intend to work in health related careers providing them with the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding required for working in a care environment. The Institute is also involved in continuing updating exercises, thereby keeping professionals abreast with recent developments in health care. Our fifth formers can only join the Preparatory Course for the Diploma in Health Science because to be able to join any of the other courses interested students are reminded that they must satisfy the entry requirements set by the University of Malta and thus students are reminded that they must satisfy the entry requirements set by the University of Malta and thus they are advised to pursue with their studies at the Ġan Franġisk Abela Junior College. Institute of Health Care University of Malta Courses Preparatory Course for the Diploma in Health Science The Institute of Health Care offers this course for those students who are interested in taking up a career in one of the following areas related to health care namely Dental Technology, Environmental Health, Midwifery, Nursing Studies, Psychiatric Nursing, Podiatry and Radiography or in any other area approved by the University Senate. Students who have successfully completed this preparatory course can register to join a two-year Diploma In Health Science in the same area of study. Admission Requirements Applicants should be 17 years (18 years in the case of Radiography) within 3 months of commencement of course and they should be in possession of six passes at Grade 5 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination which must include: English Language, Maltese, Mathematics and a Science subject. In addition, prospective candidates must satisfy the Institute of Health Care that s/he has the necessary aptitude for which purpose s/he may be required to attend an interview and the Department of Health as to their medical fitness. Institute of Conservation & Management of Cultural Heritage Courses Offered MCAST Foundation Certificate Masonry Heritage Skills (RIFFIED) The ICMCH in collaboration with MCAST offers vocational courses for skilled craftsmen and stonemasons in Heritage Skills. This programme is structured allowing sequential progression from one level to another. It starts from the introductory riffied course and proceeds through sewwej and mastru levels. The ICMCH offers other courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate level awarded by the University of Malta. Interested students are reminded that to follow these courses they must satisfy the entry requirements set by the University of Malta and thus they are advised to consult the special course requirements pertaining to each course. MCAST Foundation Certificate in Masonry Heritage Skills (RIFFIED) The aim of the course is to provide training and apprenticeship in specialised heritage skills. The coursework and syllabus has both theoretical and practical components and is intended to present essential tools and methods in cleaning, consolidation and protection of stone buildings in general. MCAST Selection Criteria When the number of applicants who satisfy the entry requirements and choose the course exceeds the number of available places, an order of merit is drawn for all applicants choosing the course. After an applicant is considered eligible for a course the number of points is worked according to the examination results and the course requirements accordingly:  The total points for Compulsory subjects is multiplied by 5.  The total points for Preferred subjects is multiplied by 3. 33 MCAST Selection Criteria
 When there is a choice within the list of Compulsory Subjects the ones with the highest grades are multiplied by 5. Any additional passes in compulsory subjects are considered as Preferred subjects. All other passes are given their relative number of points.  Points are also allotted for qualifications obtained from MCAST, BTEC, C&G or any other recognised institution.  The total of all the points obtained by an applicant indicates the place in the order of merit for admission into a course. All applicants, that are offered a place to start a course are to complete a Registration Form and produce any documents as necessary. If after the first call for applications there are courses where places are still available there will be other calls for applications. Students who have successfully completed a course at MCAST and apply to follow a higher course in the same area of study will be given priority over those applicants who apply for the same course from outside MCAST. Certificate in Automotive Maintenance and Repair (Level 2) This Craft Certificate Course is designed for those preparing for employment as Automotive Mechanics in the Motor Vehicle Industry. During this course the students follow the Certificate in the C&G 4101 Course. The students are involved in a broad range of practical skills together with the technological under pinning knowledge that are appropriate for a person who is developing skills needed to carry out full servicing and repairs. Part-66 Aircraft Maintenance Category A Licence Course (Level 2) This course is designed specifically to equip individuals with the necessary theoretical and practical understanding of aircraft mainten-ance. The course permits the holder to issue certificates of release to service following minor scheduled line maintenance, and simple defect rectification within limits of tasks specifically endorsed on the authorization. 44 Institute of Mechanical Engineering
Diploma in Automotive Maintenance and Repair ( Level 3) This Diploma programme is designed for those preparing for employment in the Motor Vehicle Industry. The Technician Diploma provides a broad theoretical and practical knowledge of motor vehicle including electrical and electronics work. This programme provides also a broader range of skills appropriate to a person who is able to carry out full service and repairs and diagnoses faults. During their work students are exposed to a deep- er knowledge in the related subjects namely Mathematics, English, Science and Information Technology. Successful students may proceed to the Certificate in Advanced Auto Diagnostic Techniques. Duration: 1year full-time and 2 years part-time on an apprenticeship.
