1 Expression of motility-related molecule Cdc42 in endometrial tissue in women with adenomyosis and ovarian endometriomata  Gaia Goteri, M.D., Andrea Ciavattini, M.D., Guendalina Lucarini, Ph.D., Nina Montik, M.D., Alessandra Filosa, M.D., Daniela Stramazzotti, Ph.D., Graziella Biagini, M.D., Andrea Luigi Tranquilli, M.D.  Fertility and Sterility  Volume 86, Issue 3, Pages (September 2006) DOI: /j.fertnstert Copyright © 2006 American Society for Reproductive Medicine Terms and Conditions

2 FIGURE 1 Examples of Cdc42 immunostaining in proliferative eutopic endometrium. Glandular epithelial cells are similarly stained in a patient without endometriosis (A), in a patient with adenomyosis (B), and in a patient with ovarian endometrioma (C). The stromal cells show no staining in A and B but are strongly stained in C. Goteri. Cdc42 in eutopic and ectopic endometrium. Fertil Steril 2006. 3 FIGURE 2 Examples of Cdc42 immunostaining in secretory eutopic endometrium. Glandular epithelial cells are similarly strongly stained in a patient with adenomyosis (A) and in a patient with ovarian endometrioma (B). The stromal cells show no staining in A but are strongly stained in B. Goteri. Cdc42 in eutopic and ectopic endometrium. Fertil Steril 2006. 4 FIGURE 3 Comparison of the mean expression of Cdc42 expression in epithelial and stromal cells of eutopic endometrium in patients without endometriosis (A, B), with infiltrative adenomyosis (C, D), and with ovarian endometriotic cysts (E, F) in proliferative (A, C, E, light blue) and secretory (B, D, F, dark blue) phases. Values are shown as mean with 95% confidence interval. As shown, there is a significant increase of expression in secretory phase (B) compared with proliferative phase (A) in patients without endometriosis (*P=.01). Patients with infiltrative adenomyosis tended to have a lower Cdc42 expression in proliferative phase (C) than in secretory phase (D) (t test, P=.11). Patients with adenomyosis in proliferative phase (C), who have the lowest mean percentage of Cdc42 expression, significantly differ from patients with endometriotic cysts, who have the highest mean percentage of Cdc42 expression, both in the proliferative (E) (**P=.01) and secretory phase (F) (***P=.0007). 5 FIGURE 4 In adenomyosis, the percentage of Cdc42 expression in the disease foci inside the myometrium are directly correlated with the expression in the eutopic endometrium (r = 0.87, P<.0001). 6 FIGURE 5 In adenomyosis, both the eutopic (A, B) and the ectopic (C, D) endometrium show a trend of Cdc42 mean expression to increase in secretory phase (B, D, dark blue) compared with proliferative phase (A, C, light blue). Values are shown as mean with 95% confidence interval (t test: A vs. B, P=.11; C vs. D, P=.07). Goteri. Cdc42 in eutopic and ectopic endometrium. Fertil Steril 2006. 7 FIGURE 6 In ovarian endometriosis, the eutopic (A, B) but not the ectopic (C, D) endometrium shows a trend of Cdc42 mean expression to increase in secretory phase (B, D, dark blue) compared with proliferative phase (A, C, light blue). Values are shown as mean with 95% confidence interval (t test: A vs. B, P=.08; C vs. D, P=.27). Goteri. Cdc42 in eutopic and ectopic endometrium. Fertil Steril 2006.
