Question Box Each day you will be expected to come up with questions during morning lectures and bring them to your afternoon lab. We will pool the questions in the box anonymously and address some of them right at the start. Trust that we will try our best to answer all your questions, even if we do it later in the week.

Argument Recap A.R.E. Argument My first argument is… My second argument is… Reason I believe this because… The reason for this is… Evidence My evidence is from… This is supported by…

SPAR Topics Honesty is always the best policy. True love really doesnt exist. Aventura/2Pac/Jay Z is better than Mana/Biggie/Kanye. Police are necessary for safety. People should et meat. Students should work after school jobs Fast food should be banned in certain neighborhoods. School starts too early. Gangs provide youth with a family and support structure. People should not be allowed to own pets. Legal driving age should be lowered to 14.

Flowing Knowing what arguments the other team made and answering them is crucial to being a good debater. In order to do this, you MUST flow. (Flow or Die in debate). I will model, then we will practice: Lyrics of a Song Cards

The Claim Game One of the easiest ways to win in debate (and in arguments generally) is to point out when someone is B***S****ing. Throughout camp we will be playing the claim game in lab. Everyone starts out with 0 points and points are bad. You do not want points. Each time you make an ARGUMENT (or CLAIM) you have to have a REASON (say WHY) and cite some EVIDENCE. Rules You can call out anyone in lab who you think has made an unwarranted claim: i.e. they say something and do not have a because statement or any evidence. The lab leader will judge whether they get a point. The person with the fewest points on Sunday wins the LAMDL Claim Game Prize.

Speaking Drill Place your pen sideways in your mouth Read one evidence card as fast and as clear as you can. Have your partner flow you. Give feedback on how clear you were

SPAR Topics Resolved: School should not be mandatory. Resolved: Fast food restaurants should be banned in certain neighborhoods.

SPAR 1AC – 90 seconds 1NC cross of 1AC (60 seconds) 1NC (90 seconds) 1AC cross of 1NC (60 seconds) 1AR (45 seconds) 1NR (45 seconds) Ac should have a case: Inherency, harms, solvency. NC should have: On case defense (frontlines), off case disadvantages Rebuttals should have: Framing/summary of debate from flow Impact calculus / net benefits Why you should win

Preparing the 1AC 1 AC – 8 minute speech I. Inherency Current state of the problem II. Significance/Harm Bad things that will happen if we do not address the problem III. The Plan Specific strategy to fix the problem IV. Solvency How the plan will work. 1AC – 8 minute speech I. U.S. maintains a large military presence in Okinawa. John Feffer 10; Michael Werbowski 10. II. U.S. presence threatens alliance which risks starting war. Asahi Shimbun 10; LA Times 10; Dr. Kapila 10; Jonathan Landy 10; Michael Auslin 10; and Dr. Kapila 10. III. U.S. should substantially reduce its military presence in Japan… … by removing base in Okinawa and moving forces to Guam. IV. Withdrawal plan will work because… Chalmers Johnson 10; George Packard 10; Doug Bandow 10.

Preparing the 2AC (Just FYI) I. Answer each of arguments made my the 1NC. II. Pre-empt arguments that you think the 2NC will try to make. III. Extend each of the arguments made by the 1AC. (last chance to introduce new arguments) I. Answer arguments about the case and the primacy disadvantage. II. Preempt arguments about how Japan will not rearm, alliance split will destabilize, nucs deter, etc. III. Extent arguments about current problem (inherency) will lead to the war (harms), and how withdrawal will solve.

Preparing the 1AR (Just FYI) I. Respond to the 2NC. II. Respond to the arguments made in 1NR. III. Extend each argument made in the 2AC. IV. Extent the original case (inherency, harms, solvency) made in 1AC. I. Answers to Neg arguments. II. Answers to primacy disadvantage. III. Extend why U.S. needs to withdraw, and how moving troops to Guam will solve, etc. IV. Plan will work.

Agenda Question Box SPAR (optional) Unpacking the 1NC Lecture Review Interlab Competition Time – 3:30pm – Outside Speaking Drills Flowing

The 1NC 1NC – Case Argument – Some part of the Aff. case is wrong; – There is no problem or the problem will fix itself; – Can also argue that aff. Case makes problem worse. ________________________________________ Topicality – The Aff. plan is not the sort of action required by the resolution. Disadvantages – The Aff. plan cases bad things to happen (these bad effects outweigh the good effects). Counterplans – A different proposal for how to solve the problem; must show why the Aff. case is a bad idea. Critiques – Argue that the Aff. should be rejected because it uses bad ideas, research, or because the logic is no good. 1Nc – Case argument The Alliance will survive without pulling out troops (Green 10; Chanlett 10; Twining 10; Glosserman 10; McCormack 10; Auslin 10; Twining 10; Green 10). Japan will not rearm (Lawless 10; CSIS 10; Kulacki 10; etc.) Alliance split will cause instability (Madsen 10; CSIS 10; Bandow 10; etc.). Nuclear weapons will deter war in Asia (Garvin 10; Garvin 10, etc.). Answer to 1AC Advantages Banning expansion would solve Dungong (Center for BioDiversity 10, etc.). Disadvantages: Alliance Turn (DA) Asian War Disadvantage (DA) Civil-Military Relations Disadvantage (DA) Primacy Disadvantage (DA)

The 2NC (Just FYI) Extending part of the 1NC – Must extend some but not all of the arguments from the 1NC; arguments my change in form; no requirements to cover all the arguments. New Arguments – Not common but sometimes the 2NC will make entirely new arguments Extending parts of the 1NC Extend U.S. Japan alliance is strong; Japan will not rearm; Alliance split will cause instability; nuclear weapons deter war; and/or answer to Dunong advantage. New arguments – Whichever combination of the disadvantages you think strongest. – Primacy DA – Alliance Turn (DA) – No Alternative (DA) – Asian War (DA) – Civil-Military Relations (DA)

The 1NR (Just FYI) Extending other 1NC arguments. – Kind of an extension of the 2NC; second speech in the negative block; must extend different but complementary arguments from the 2NC; not allowed to make new arguments. Pick and choose. – No requirement to extend all the arguments of the 1NC; Aff. Can extend arguments from the 2Ac that are not answered so be sure and block them; Extending the 1NC – Read from answers and extensions. Address the arguments of the Affirmative 2AC and block the 1AR. Pick and choose – Pick the arguments which are strongest.

2NR (Just FYI) Overcoming the presumption of the 2AR – Must be persuasive to convince judge; refute all arguments made in the 1AR; judge should understand negative position as well as reasons why neg. should win each round. Telling the story – Put all the arguments together into a story explaining which arguments the negative is winning and why; this overview should be short yet comprehensive Overcoming the presumption of the 2AR – Address each of the Aff. Arguments about how moving troops to Guam is better, etc. Impact calculus Timeframe, magnitude, probability. Telling the story – Frame the debate, show off your flowing skills by retracing the debate and showing (subtly) how the neg. won each round.

Agenda Opener SPAR (optional) Types of Questions for Cross Ex Practice Debates Interlab Cross-Ex Game (optional) Practice Debates

Types of questions for the cross Always have some cross questions written before hand (especially in novice). Make sure you remember what they say accurately so you can use it against them in your next speech. Use all your time because it gives your partner time to prep. Types of questions: Clarification What does this mean? Can you elaborate this? Pointing out errors (flaws in logic) Can you explain the link between your harm and nuclear war in your own words? Setting up your arguments Can you define racism? So you agree that it is an ideology? Does it have to do with white supremacy?
