As illustrated, purinergic signaling influences both the process of inflammation as well as cellular regeneration. Extracellular ATP from biologic stress can incite inflammation. As ATP is metabolized by ectonucleotidases on endothelial surfaces to adenosine, the inflammatory response is regulated through induction of immune suppressive T regulatory cells. This has important implications for potential therapies in malignancy and liver transplantation.
