Question 3. When people succeed, it is because of hard work – luck has nothing to do with success.
Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.

1.Troy Lund I think the most essential skill to success in the workplace today – in the world today, in general – is the ability to understand and navigate technology.

2.Arroe Collins You have to have hard work. You have to have dedication.

3.Eric Medler I do believe that when people succeed, it is because of hard work, and that luck has little to do with success.

4.Bernie Beamon You have to work hard in life if you wanna be successful.

5.De Niro I think hard work is the most important thing for success.

6. Morgan Barnhart I both agree and disagree with this.
I agree with this in the sense that hard work does pay off. However, there are those people that have simply fell into success by whatever means.

7. Shelby Lanier I think, for the most part, it is hard work.
I think success comes from determination; it comes from perseverance; it comes from a drive and a willingness to do what needs to be done to get to a position of success. There is some luck involved; I wouldn’t say that there isn’t.

8. Daniel G Hard work and determination are largely responsible for success. However, one also must be lucky or fortunate at times. Hard work helps control things that can be controlled. However, I believe we all need at least a little luck to help us with things that we cannot control.

9.Danielle Fornes I disagree with the quotation.
I don’t think that hard work itself is the only reason people succeed. I do think that luck has something to do with it.

COMPLETE ANSWERS

1.Troy Lund I think the most essential skill to success in the workplace today – in the world today, in general – is the ability to understand and navigate technology. If you don’t have that ability, or if you are deficient in the use of computers and understanding of technology, there is simply no way for you to succeed in the modern world, so I think that is certainly top-of-the-list.

2.Arroe Collins I’ve always looked at success as being a gift under a Christmas tree. You wanted it so bad, you could taste it. And when you got it, you couldn’t take care of it. Luck gave you that gift on a single day during the year. But through hard work, dedication, loyalty, and determination, you were able to take care of that gift. So you lost it, and you spend the rest of your life going, “Well, I used to be...well, I used to be...” You have to have hard work. You have to have dedication. If you don’t have a vision to reach a certain point, if that gift ever comes back around again, if you’re not gonna take care of it, it’s gonna break again.

3.Eric Medler I do believe that when people succeed, it is because of hard work, and that luck has...I can’t say ‘nothing to do with success’, but I don’t think it has nearly as much to do with success as hard work does. I think that if you work hard at something, you have to make your own breaks, if you know what I mean. You have to find your opportunities, but a lot of people would be calling that being lucky at something, but if you put yourself in a position to succeed, some people call that luck, you know. If you’re an actor – if you audition a lot, you’re working hard. If you get a part, it’s not luck; it’s ‘cause you worked hard, although some people will say, “Isn’t he lucky?” He got a lot of luck simply because he worked really hard to get to where he was, or she got really – worked really hard to get to where she was.

4.Bernie Beamon You have to work hard in life if you wanna be successful. You can talk or ask any businessman, and they’ll tell you they put in long hours. And there’s a thousand people behind you trying to compete for the same business.

5.De Niro Well, personally, I think hard work is the most important thing for success. They say Thomas Edison actually made 3,000 attempts at making a light bulb before he finally succeeded. Now, that’s a lot of hard work, but that just shows you that things just don’t happen without you really putting forth a great deal of effort. There are some instances when people just get lucky and amazing things just seem to get thrown at their feet. But those times are few and far between. For the most part, it’s just good, old hard work and persistence that contribute to the success of most people.

6. Morgan Barnhart When people succeed it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success. I both agree and disagree with this. I agree with this in the sense that hard work does pay off. You will get noticed through your hard work. I’ve got noticed plenty of times through my hard work and dedication to – to what I’m passionate about, and without that hard work and dedication I wouldn’t be noticed, however, there are those people that have simply fell into success by whatever means, and let’s say, for example, Paris Hilton. She’s famous because of her name. She fell into it. She did absolutely nothing to earn that success. She literally fell into being famous. So that’s a prime example of why I disagree with, you know, it is because of hard work, but for the rest of us, hard work really does pay off. I know for me hard work and dedication pays off in the end.

7. Shelby Lanier I think, for the most part, it is hard work. I think success comes from determination; it comes from perseverance; it comes from a drive and a willingness to do what needs to be done to get to a position of success. There is some luck involved; I wouldn’t say that there isn’t. Some people are just in the right spot at the right time. When something comes along and that helps push them in the right direction, maybe there was an opportunity that wasn’t there before. So there is some luck involved, but I would say that 90% of it probably comes down to their hard work and their determination, as to how successful they’re going to be.

8. Daniel G Hard work and determination are largely responsible for success. However, one also must be lucky or fortunate at times. Hard work helps control things that can be controlled. However, I believe we all need at least a little luck to help us with things that we cannot control, such as the weather, or health, or other problems beyond an individual’s control; things we depend upon, that are outside of our immediate control. So, success is achieved through hard work; but luck, even a little luck, usually plays a small role along the way, and that luck can be in the form of unexplainable good luck, good fortunes, or wonderful blessings.

9.Danielle Fornes I disagree with the quotation. I don’t think that hard work itself is the only reason people succeed. I do think that luck has something to do with it. For example, you could work hard your entire life and be up for a promotion and, you know, work really hard, but sometimes it takes that stroke of luck; maybe you run into the boss at the grocery store and you have a really interesting conversation and he thinks, well maybe I want you for that promotion, or God forbid, someone gets sick or something and because of that, you get the promotion. I definitely think that luck has something to do with success. I don’t think that you can be successful only with luck. I do think hard work has something to do with it, but I do think luck plays a small part.
