2 Internet Basics included a brief introduction to the library website and your account. Internet Searching builds on these skills to help you to become comfortable searching online.

3 What is the Internet? The Internet is a massive network of networks. It connects millions of computers together globally. The World Wide Web is a way of accessing information over the Internet.

4 What can I do on the Internet? Find information Communicate (i.e. , IM, Skype) Share (upload and share pictures and more) Shop (the web is the worlds biggest shopping mall!) Play (you can play games on the web)

5 Key Features of the Browser: Internet Explorer

6 Internet Explorer Toolbar 1.Back Button and Forward Button 2.Reload / Refresh Button and Stop Button 3.Favorites Center 4.Home 5.Tools (including Print)

7 Ways of Navigating to a Site 1. Typing in the web address – as every page on the Internet has an unique address 2. Using links – Surrey Libraries has a great list 3. Using a search engine (i.e. Google or Bing)

8 Parts of a Web Address Every web page has an address, sometimes called a URL URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator stands for hypertext transfer protocol www stands for World Wide Web The domain name is the name of the site – i.e. surreylibraries The extension is the type of site:.com,.ca,.org

12 Navigating to a Site: Using a Search Engine (Google) A search engine returns a custom list of links based on your keyword search. When multiple pages from the same website are found, the most relevant page is listed first with the next page from the same site indented below.

13 Google Image Search Visit Google Image Search is a search service created by Google which allows users to search the web for image content. Filter image results by their size, type and colour.
