2 General Context Commemorate the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year Commemorate the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year Other programs: Other programs: –International Polar Year (IPY) Earth climate studies from the polar regions Earth climate studies from the polar regions –International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) The largest database of information about the past and present status of planet Earth that has ever existed The largest database of information about the past and present status of planet Earth that has ever existed –Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY) to focus effort on a 21st Century e-Science approach to issues of data stewardship: open access to data, data preservation, data discovery, data rescue, capacity building, and outreach. The development of Virtual Observatories and Laboratories is a central feature of eGY to focus effort on a 21st Century e-Science approach to issues of data stewardship: open access to data, data preservation, data discovery, data rescue, capacity building, and outreach. 13 CIPs Propose –A researcher proposes activities with specific science goals, requiring multiple resources not necessarily under her control (UK web page).UK web page Coordinate –IHY Discipline Planners review the proposal to co-ordinate with other CIPs and to link the proposer with representatives for instruments, observatories, and models. The Proposer and facility representatives arrange the details of observation modes, schedules etc. and do the work. Review –IHY Universal Process Workshop Planners identify relevant CIPs to start planning summary workshops. These will happen towards the end of 2007 and into 2008, and provide forums for drawing together and reviewing the results from IHY science.
