On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO This module is part of a set of power points that describes how works the EX- ACT tool. EX-ACT (Ex-Ante Carbon-balance tool) is a tool developed by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It is aimed at providing estimations of the mitigation impact of agriculture and forestry development projects, estimating net carbon balance from Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and carbon sequestration. It is a land based accounting system associated with the adoption of alternative land management options (See the linked flyer of the EX-ACT tool). The tool is developed with a modular approach, each module going to be described in such a power point. Acknowledgement

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO After reading this module, you should: understand how the afforestation/reforestation module of EX-ACT works; know which data are required to run the afforestation/reforestation module; be able to fill in the afforestation/reforestation module by yourself. Objectives

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO How filling it Simplest approach by default (Tier-1) Approach with more detailed information (Tier-2) 2 possible approaches:

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO How filling it... …or intermediary calculations User will have to fill only few information Fields to be filled in Tier-1 Fields to be filled in Tier-2 All other information corresponds to default values…

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO Explanations step by step... 1

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO Step by step...1/7 Available forest or plantation proposed within the Climatic zone

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO This map is just indicative, thus Climatic zone is defined before with climatic parameters On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO Definition of the forestry system This table presents to the user the default vegetations (natural forest or tree plantation) available for the project within the climate zone (according to information provided in the description module) Step by step...1/7

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO Those names will be used below as the entries for the vegetation selected Step by step...1/7 Definition of the forestry system

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO 2 Step by step...

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO This table reports the default values for each compartment (pools) of the corresponding default vegetations Step by step...2/7 Coefficients used

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO User can select one of the preset default vegetation User can also select one of the specific vegetation Step by step...4/7 Definition of some management

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO User can inform the land use before the reforestation for the default types (Tier 1) for the user types (Tier 2) Step by step...4/7 Definition of some management

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO User can inform is the area will be burnt before being reforested for the default types (Tier 1) for the user types (Tier 2) Step by step...4/7 Definition of some management

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO Defaults coefficients of the model The user can enter its own coefficients if he has it Step by step...4/7 Definition of some management

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO Step by step... 5

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO This table presents all the coefficients and calculations made by the model Step by step...5/7

On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO Glossary On-line resource materials for policy making Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool Global warming potential (GWP) is a measure of how much a given mass of greenhouse gas is estimated to contribute to global warming. It is a relative scale which compares the gas in question to that of the same mass of carbon dioxide (whose GWP is by definition 1) Emission factor: normalized coefficient that allows for calculating the emission fluxes of GHG Carbon sink: system that absorb naturally a part of the CO 2 emitted in the atmosphere and store carbon during a more or less long term Carbon balance: should be considered, for a specific project (or scenario of action) in comparison with a reference, as the net balance of all GHG emissions expressed in CO 2 equivalent (sources and sinks) with the atmosphere interface and the net change in C stocks (biomass, soil…).
