1 HB. 2B.1 Structure and Function of Organelles
Develop and use models to explain how specialized structures within cells interact to produce, modify and transport proteins

2 What are organelles? Organelle- part of a cell that performs a specialized function Organelles in Eukaryotic cells include: Nucleus Mitochondria Chloroplasts Lysosomes Vacuoles Ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Apparatus Cilia Flagella Cell Membrane Nuclear Membrane Cell Wall Cytoskeleton Cytoplasm

3 Organelles and Their Functions
Nucleus- contains chromosomes made of DNA Site of genetic control of cell Mitochondria- site of cellular respiration Provides energy for the cell (power plant) Chloroplasts- ONLY FOUND IN PLANTS Contain chlorophyll- green pigment that converts energy from the Sun into CO2, sugar, and H2O (photosynthesis) Lysosomes- contain enzymes used to digest materials Vacuoles- stores materials like H2O, salts proteins and carbohydrates Smaller in animal cells than in plant cells

4 Organelles and Their Functions
Ribosome- site of protein production Some found in ER others in cytoplasm Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)- complex system to transport materials throughout the inside of the cell. Smooth- no ribosomes Rough- ribosomes attached to surface (studded) Golgi Apparatus- packages and distributes molecules within or outside the cell. Cilia- short hair like projections used to move animal cells or protists

5 Organelles and Their Functions
Flagella- long whip like projection used to move animal cells, bacteria, or protists Cell membrane- encloses cell, regulates passage of material between cell and environment and aids in protection and support Nuclear membrane (envelope)- surrounds nucleus and regulates passage between nucleus and cytoplasm. Cell Wall- surrounds cell membrane and provides protection and support in plant cells, bacteria, fungi, and some protists. Also, it allows passage of specific materials in and out of the cell.

6 Organelles and Their Functions
Cytoplasm- semi-fluid material inside cell that contains molecules and organelles and is bound by the cell membrane but not in the nucleus. Cytoskeleton- help maintain a cells shape, is involved in movement and material transport with a network of protein filaments like microfilaments and microtubules. They also help move the cilia and flagella.
