4. Receive
“How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You give to God one-tenth of everything you earn—even your mint, dill, and cumin. But you don’t obey the really important teachings of the law—justice, mercy, and being loyal. These are the things you should do, as well as those other things. You guide the people, but you are blind! You are like a person who picks a fly out of a drink and then swallows a camel!
From the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 23, verses 23 and 24

5. Engage
There is a phrase … “to follow the letter of the law”, it means that a person might be doing what is written in the law but has lost the true meaning and understanding of why the law was created.
Jesus is often critical of those who smugly show-off and display how good they are at doing what is written in the laws.
Faithfulness to God’s laws means understanding why they were created and the important teachings – “justice, mercy, and being loyal” and then acting on them in our lives.

What actions have you done that show justice, mercy or loyalty?
Activity suggestion … Find out about local charity organisations – maybe do some voluntary work.

God,
help us to be aware of the teachings about justice, mercy and being loyal,
may we show our understanding and commitment to these through our actions.
