1 Brainstorm definition of CLIMATE and WEATHER
EL: To construct and interpret a climate graph, and to know the difference between climate and weather Brainstorm definition of CLIMATE and WEATHER

2 Climate and Weather Climate Definition:
Is the average weather in a place. It tells you what the weather is usually like by measuring the weather of a long period (usually 30 years) and calculating an average Weather definition: the state of the atmosphere regarding heat, cloudiness, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain etc. at a particular time and place

3 Draw two columns in your books: climate one side and weather on the other side
Weather or Climate

4 What two aspects of weather do you think a climate graph will show?
A climate graph tells us the average temperature and rainfall of a place for each month of the year. Here is an example from the savanna in Africa: The red line shows us the temperature in degrees Celsius; it uses the right hand axis The blue bars show us the precipitation (rain, snow etc.) in mm; it uses the left hand axis

5 In your books; Using the climate graph- What is the average temperature in December in the savanna? In what month is the highest rainfall and how many mm is it? Extension- How would you DESCRIBE this climate? What would it be like to live there?

6 What would it be like to live there?
What is the average temperature in December in the savanna? 25 degrees c (use the RED line and right hand axis) In what month is the highest rainfall and how many mm is it? August has the most rainfall, it has 80 mm (use the blue bar and left axis)

7 What does a climate graph tell us about the typical weather conditions we might expect for places around the world?

8 Extension; what month could this have been in?
Task: Draw your own Climate Graph for London using the data provided. Remember- you need to have twelve months along the bottom mm on the left (precipitation) degrees c on the right (temperature) RULES- Choose one to do first – either Precipitation OR Temperature Precipitation must be shown in a bar graph Temperature must be shown in a line graph – plot the points in the centre of the month. Extension; what month could this have been in?

9 What is the total annual rainfall (add the precipitation figures up)?
Extension- When you have done the graph (including double checked it, and stuck in), answer in your book: What is the temperature range – the difference between the highest and lowest temperature? What is the total annual rainfall (add the precipitation figures up)? What is the average temperature (add the temperature figures up and divide by 12). Extension; what month could this have been in? Extension; what month could this have been in?

10 It should look something like this!
Task- Describe the climate in London- what is it like there? In London the climate is…………..

11 Plenary: How well can you read climate graphs
Plenary: How well can you read climate graphs? Match each graph to a place. Write 1,2,3 and add the correct city name in your book. MUMBAI: Here we enjoy a tropical climate, it’s always warm which is nice, but we do have a monsoon seasons every year which always causes problems with flooding! 1 2 TOKYO: Here it rains a lot in the summer but not so much in winter. It is very humid in the summer months but winter is quite mild. I don’t normally get to build snowmen! 3 TORONTO: We have cold winters, it usually snows, but our summers are lovely and warm. You need to carry an umbrella all year round though! We have 4 distinct seasons.

12 Task - Can you describe the climate in the savanna
Task - Can you describe the climate in the savanna? Use full sentences and include what the climate graph tells us, eg. is it hot/cold, which months are the driest/wettest etc. Extension- how is it different to London?
