2. BOOKMARK PROJECT: Who: Each student will work independently
What: 25 bookmark project
Where: One bookmark placed in each chapter
When: Each day, for 25 class days; Due the first week of December when we finish the novel.
Why: Because we love reading and learning, and we don’t want to write another essay.
*Copying another person’s Bookmark will result in a failing grade for both the copier, and the person loaning their bookmark to someone else. Be smart. Have integrity.

3. Bookmark Requirements:
The expectation is that you are reading a chapter per class period, and completing the corresponding bookmark.
There will be check-ins every Friday and you will get points for having the week’s bookmarks complete.
You will use them to create a project- don’t lose them.
They will all be collected on Friday, December 2nd
Put your name on each one.
Write the page number where you found the information.
You will cut them out as you need them.

4. Requirements: Each bookmark needs to… Be written neatly and legibly.
Have complete sentences.
Have correct spelling and grammar.
Demonstrate your best academic writing.
Answer the prompt on the top of the bookmark and on this PowerPoint.

5. Chapters 1-25 Bookmark Vocabulary
As you read, note 15 words that are important to the Igbo tribe, and the people of Umuofia.
You need to include the page number you find them on.

6. Chapter 1: Cultural Mores
While reading chapter 1, be looking for clues or examples of the cultural mores of the people of Umuofia and the Igbo tribe. Take notes on the back of the bookmark, then explain them in a well written paragraph on the front.

7. Chapter 2:
In a well-written paragraph that reflects your reading and understanding of the chapter, explain the main moral issue our protagonist is faced with.

8. Chapter 3:
In a well-written paragraph that reflects your reading and understanding of the chapter, explain the dilemma our protagonist is faced with.

9. Chapter 4: “the festival” in Chronological order….

10. Chapter 5: husband & wife dynamics
In a well written, detailed paragraph that reflects your reading, explain the relationship between Okonkwo and his wife.

11. Chapter 6: Wrestling match
Draw a detailed picture of how the Igbo tribe holds a wrestling match. Be sure to label specific aspects of how they set up their matches, for instance where people specifically sit and in what order.

12. Chapter 7: Ikemefuna
Defend Okonkwo’s actions toward Ikemefuna in chapter 7. Explain why you believe he did what he did.

13. Chapter 8: Confused?
What part of this chapter was unclear or confusing? Be sure to explain precisely what you were confused about. Ex: In chapter 8, I was confused when… Ex: In chapter 8, on page ____, I did not understand why…

14. Chapter 9: Questions?!
What is a question you would like to ask the author or a character of this reading section?
Be sure to ask a detailed question that REFLECTS that you read the chapter.
Good Examples:
Ex: How did it feel when you…?
Ex: Why did you ______?
Ex: What was it like to…?
Bad Example:
What happened in this chapter?

15. Chapter 10: Dialect & jargon
Dialect: Language that is peculiar to a specific region or social group.
Jargon:  Expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand.
Choose one example of the Igbo tribe’s dialect and explain what it means.
OR-
Choose one example of the Igbo tribe’s jargon and explain its importance to the tribe.

16. Chapter 11: Literary Devices
Locate one example of a literary device, and in a paragraph, explain how it is enhancing the meaning or understanding of the chapter.

17. Chapter 12: Understanding the culture
After reading chapter 12, how have your feelings or understanding of the Igbo culture changed. Be sure to explain the specific moment in the chapter that had an impact on your understanding.

Summarize the chapter in a well-written paragraph that reflects your reading and understanding.

19. Chapter 14: Okonkwo’s perspective
Write a journal entry from the perspective of Okonkwo that includes specific details from the chapter. Be sure to mention how he is feeling in his new surroundings.

20. Chapter 15: Fact v Opinion-
Explain the Ibo people’s perception of the “white men” and what they think they “know” about them.

21. Chapter 16: Albino’s perspective
Explain how this chapter would be different if it were told from the perspective of an “albino” character. You need to include specific details from the chapter.

22. Chapter 18: *History class*
Explain how the subject of this chapter connects to something you have learned in a History class. Think about moments in our history that are similar to ones in our novel. Explain.

23. Chapter 17: Nwoye converts
Explain how the Nwoye changes in this chapter. What does he do to change? Why does he want to change in the first place? Explain your answer in a well written, academic paragraph.

24. Chapter 19: Rules of the Feast
Implicit: something that is not stated directly, but is implied by examples, dialogue, or imager. Ex: He passed the palm wine around the table. Explicit: Said directly by a character or narrator. 25. Chapter 20: Purpose
Explain the purpose of Chapter 20. What importance do you predict it will have for the rest of the novel? Include examples from the chapter to demonstrate your comprehension.

26. Chapter 21: Mr. Brown builds a school
In a well-written paragraph that reflects your reading and understanding of the chapter, explain the prejudices or biases Mr. Brown holds toward the Igbo people’s religion and way of life.

27. Chapter 22: Foreshadowing
Make a prediction as to what will happen to our main character in the future chapters based on the events from this chapter. Be sure to clearly explain the specific events that transpired and how they impact the rest of the novel.

28. Chapter 23: District Commissioner
Explain chapter 23 from the perspective of the District Commissioner and how he would justify his actions from this chapter. Explain in a well written paragraph.

29. Chapter 24: Okonkwo’s future
Based on what you read in chapter 24, what conclusions can you make about the author and his attitude toward the subject of the novel. Explain in a well-written paragraph.

30. Chapter 25: Theme
Based on everting you’ve read, determine the theme of the novel. Remember, a theme is not just one word (ex: Love). A theme is a statement that explains the author’s message from the novel. (True love can endure any hardship) Explain your theme and why you chose it in a well written paragraph.

31. Expand a bookmark- In Class Writing!
DIRECTIONS: Choose either bookmark 5 or 7 to expand into a well-written essay. Your paper should be at least four paragraphs, include an introduction with a thesis statement, two body paragraphs that include textual evidence, and a conclusion.
