Connotation: Shows its an emotional time for Winston, as he comes to the understanding that he has fallen back into the ways of the Party.
Impact on Text: Shows that this is an emotional time for Winston. He is emotional because he was forced to believe in Big Brother.

5. “struggle” Denotation: to contend with an adversary or opposing force
Connotation: Winston says that his struggle was finished. His struggle was fighting his internal thoughts of opposing thoughts on Big Brother.
Impact on Text: Lets the reader know that Winston’s decision to conform with society was not easy. He was forced to fight a strong adversary in himself.

I think that this passage shows the power and ability of Big Brother. Their ability to change the views of Winston, who was a die hard rebel, and wanted nothing to do with Big brother at the beginning of the novel shows their power. Winston has no other option but to conform to the thoughts of Big Brother.

14. Personal Reaction
I believe that this passage shows the big theme of control. Winston was a member of the Party, looking to rebel; however, because of the government’s power he is transformed back into a conforming Party member. Whether or not Winston will have thoughts about rebellion again is uncertain.
